That is so funny!!! When I was test driving mine and buying it, I said "what is that suposed to be?" The salesman did not know, so I looked in the manual. The other one I looked in the lot was missing too. I said, it just looks like a cover should be there, so they put one on it before I left. Must be they are all throwing them away or people are swiping them!!
The Vibes are delivered without the cover on, it's attached to the shifter in a small plastic bag, which is thrown away as "junk" by most of the dealerships. If you wish to replace it, go to a Toyota dealership, as it will be cheaper there. (Or a salvage yard. I've gotten many parts in great condition from these.)Automatic shift-lock buttons help when you're trying to install something that the lever would normally block, such as a head unit, Navi, GPS system, bluetooth, etc.
about the parts that look like they go under the car. Look under leaky roof question. go to the 3rd one down (cor. panic). click on where it says link. scroll down and it talks about shifter cover and some plugs that go underneath the car.
And once again - they wonder why we hate car dealers. Dealer Prep- what a concept!

Hello, this is my first post. I own a 2005 salsa base that is 1 year old now. My question is I am taking it in for inspection and to put on the cover and plugs that they never put on. Can someone please give me the exact website that this TSB was found on ? The dealership is playing dumb, like I am the first person to point this out to them. He wanted me to print out the official website page to prove this to him. I don't want to jinx my car, but it is one of the best cars I have owned brand new, usually by now something breaks or is not working right !!!Thanks
The tranny lock release is also handy when you leave the lights on all weekend and need to move the car for access to jump start it. Not that I've ever done this.
For what it's worth, having purchased, last Friday, a 2004 base Vibe used, one of the first things I noticed was the missing shift-lock cover (just didn't know what it was at the time). The dealer had no idea what it was....or what part of it was missing. Being a "pre-owned" Vibe, I wasn't as shocked to find a missing part such as this, but it is interesting to see how common it seems to be to find the shift-lock cover missing.
I took mine in on Monday and they had to order them from the factory because they don't stock them cover and the rubber plugs ! The service manager was suprised that I had the notice from GM, he said he was not aware of this problem. He told me that he notified the PDI guys to not get rid of those parts anymore, he said they didn't know what to do with them so they just threw them out. I think he took his honest pills that morning or something ! I will let you know if I got the right parts when they come in .
I received mine yesterday for free from the dealership yesterday !! Real easy to install, I didn't want them to touch the car after I went in to tell them because of how dumb they were playing !!
Well, I broke down an bought a "Shift Lock Override Cover" from Toyota. Cost me $3.44 + tax (Toytoa P/N 33554-12110). One of the reasons I bought the Toyota part was because I'd been quoted over $13 from the local Pontiac dealer. Then, just a couple minutes ago, I was searching through the forums, found the link to GM Parts Direct and searched for the GM part (P/N 88970988), just to compare prices.Dang! The part is shown with a retail price of $8.71, a sale price of $4.96. Sounds great...then they hit you with $9.95 for shipping. Ouch. The Toyota cover doesn't match exactly, but sure looks better than before.

Shift lock cover IS missing on mine, here is an image of it without. Dealer knows exactly what I'm talking about, but the prep guys chucked it, he's ordering it for me though and I have a signed slip saying they owe me one. I'll put a comparison photo up when I get it finally.
