Military Service

Post by BOZACK »

Jaycie is going on west pac. It got me thinking how many people on this forum is or was stationed in the military. Also if you know of anyone in the Military. All information such as time in service, branch, rank and station would be nice to know. My twin brother is in th Navy, Gunners Mate First Class, fifteen years in Dec. Currently station in Groton, Ct. teaching small arms for the Sub School.I just want to say thanks to those protecting our freedom.

Was in the Army National Guard for 9 years. In Feburary of 2003 I was mobilized to Ft brag to begin deploying to Iraq. We arrived in Kuwait on April 8 and went north to Iraq a month later. I spent 11 months in Iraq, saw pretty much the whole country as we journied north over that 11 month period. I was glad to serve my country, but I missed a lot over the deployment, so I got out in January. I was a SGT E-5.

I spent 4 years in Air Force, and I wish I had never gotten out. Avionics Technician, Charleston SC.Michigan was a bad place to come back to because of the economy. 6 months out, and I am going nuts even though I have a new job.If there is any way to get back to active duty, I will try.

Don't kno where he is now, but was at Miramar Air Station here in San Diego as well. I rarely see or hear from him. One of my younger sisters was in the Navy for a short while but broke her foot and got medically separated.

I went to the recruting center (here in Canada) after graduating college and they turned me down. The recruiter said my attitude wasn't right. Since then I've been a military contractor for the DoD at White Sands New Mexico and done some work for DnD here in Canada. Since 9-11, our U.S. contracts ended so I'm in a new career.I personnally give credit and thanks to the men and women of the armed services for having the courage to protect our freedom. Regarding our collective leaders, I have less faith in their commitment. I speak of my Canadian politicians and cannot speak for other counties.Andrew

Here I am!Sorry I couldn't get to this thread sooner, I spent the last couple days working and on my time off finishing the last of unpacking and putting things away in my new apartment. Moving sucks I tell you! Before I joined the Navy, I was going to school full time working on a Nursing degree and also working full time at the Navy Exchange here in San Diego. After September 11th, I dropped everything (school and work) and enlisted. I don't know what made me join, but I found myself at the recruiting office. Part of me wanted to be independent as I was still living with my family at the time, so that may have something to do with it.My professors thought I was nuts since I had just gotten my CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) license then out of nowhere enlisted in the military. They were wondering why I was even taking the CNA course if I wasn't going to work as a CNA.Well I left for Great Lakes, IL on March 25, 2002 for bootcamp. That had to have been the most hard and stressful nine weeks of my life! I didn't think I was going to make it through but I surprisingly did. After that I reported to "A" school at Pensacola, FL for three months of schooling for my rate (job). I am a "PR" by the way, which is an "Aircrew Survival Equipmentman". I take care of all the flight and survival equipment of pilots and aircrew members. Mainly parachutes, life rafts, survival vests, survival slings for helicopter rescues, and we also work on converting liquid oxygen to a gaseous state and loaded onto planes so the pilots can breathe. We are pretty much their last chance of survival. Now you may be asking "why didn't you go into the medical field to support all the medical schooling you have?" Well that's what happens when you get screwed by the recruiter. He pretty much told me it would be a nine month wait for the next female opening for HM (Hospital Corpsman) and I didn't want to wait any longer so I got stuck with PR.After three months in Pensacola, I went home to San Diego for two weeks before reporting to my first command, the USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76) in Newport News, VA. Upon arrival, the ship was still being built so we spent two months working out of office buildings and living in base barracks. It wasn't so bad, I got a room along with one of my friends practically for free for two months! The Navy footed the bill.Since the ship was still being built, we spent a good amount of time in the ship yards before we transferred to the naval station at Norfolk. We were there until July 2004.July of 2004 we took a two month trip around South America and ended up at Naval Station North Island located in San Diego which is now our permanent homeport. In South America, we got to visit Rio De Janeiro, Brazil; Lima, Peru; and Santiago, Chile and spent four days in each country. It was all very nice and really different from America. We reached North Island in September and have been here ever since. I am currently a Second Class Petty Officer and have been in for 3 years and 2 months. I was supposed to get out March of 2006, but extended nine months to go on deployment. I wanted to at least complete one deployment before I get out so now I am in until December 2006. Yes, I have decided to get out but I will continue my military service in the reserves and plan on doing that til I complete 20 years. I have no regrets joining the military, but feel that I must complete what I started (that being my nursing degree). I know that's its possible to get a degree while serving, but from experience it's very hard. Especially if you're constantly going out to sea. It's very hard to concentrate on classes as I've tried. So I have decided to go back to school when I get out and finish my degree. Only then will I decide whether I want to come back in and become an officer, or stay civilian and remain in the reserves.I have seen many places I would have otherwise not been able to see, I have made many friends, I have learned a lot and also matured a bit more since that is what bootcamp is supposed to do, and I enjoyed every minute of it. I also accomplished my goal of becoming independent so that is the biggest self reward I have. I even met my fiance on the ship so I really have no regrets. For those of you who have served, thank you and to those thinking about serving I say "go for it". You have nothing to lose. If you decide you don't want a military career, all you have to do is serve your time and get out. This has got to be my longest post yet, so I will end it right here! Happy reading!

sorry it took me so long to catch this post. I am currently in the Army. as of the 25th of OCT i will have been in for 3 years and 3 months. I've been at fort bragg all of the time minus 3 months for basic and 3 weeks for Airborne School. I have been accepted into the Old Guard in DC. and reenlisted for another 4 years. I will be reporting up there in january of 06. My time in the army has been interesting and adventurous to say the least. but as others have stated i do not regret it in the least. I do have one question for my swabbie friend. what does LHD stand for. when i was sent to New Orleans for Operation Helping Hand, the USS IWO JIMA was docked right outside of the building that my company was using as a patrol base, and it's designator was LHD 7, so i was curious. BTW the IWO JIMA was great for showers, hot chow, and once I even got some monday night football with wings. that was amazing.oh yah and another thing what's a shellbacksorry not up on the navy lingo

A shellback is not a Navy thing. It is a maritine thing. Anyone can achieve it as long as thay go through the initiation. Basiically you have to be on a ship at sea and cross the equator. Once you cross you do the initiation and are awarded the honor of shellback. Those of us you have not done this are known as pollywogs. There are other such maritine awards, such as the order of the locks (for going through canals, my brother has a few for the Panama canal)and blue nose (for going into the artic).

Yeah I became a Shellback during that underway period. It was a lot of fun! We got woken up at 4am then had to get dressed in 10 minutes. We had to wear our uniforms inside out and backwards. I wore my coveralls and the collar was uncomfortable as it was practically choking me so I took some scissors and cut it so it was comfortable. I then put a t-shirt that I had designed over that. I drew a pollywog and it was standing up with its arms crossed and on the front of the shirt I wrote "I'm a dirty WOG and I love it!"Our Shellbacks (the people in charge of us) made us start the day with some "exercise" so we all had to lay down in rows next to each other in a hallway and roll from one end of the hallway, then go the other way and do the same thing. We did that for a good while til we started getting dizzy. The next thing they made us do is go to the hangar bay and lay down on the nonskid and they made us do a bunch of exercises bootcamp style.Next, they mixed sea water with sea dye marker so the water glowed green, then they poured them into padeyes (they're tiedown anchors on the ground for aircraft) and they had 4 people to a padeye and we had to blow the water out. Of course it wouldn't work because there was a person on every side so the water didn't make it out but they made us do it anyways. Whenever we did manage to get water out they would refill it and make us blow it out again. This went on for a good half hour or so.Next was "breakfast". They mixed scrambled eggs, bacon, hashbrowns, ham, sausage, and whatever else and added green food coloring so it looked disgusting. They broke each paper plate into 4 pieces and we would be in a line and when we went up to the people serving the food they would put the plate in our mouths and we had to hold them without using our hands and they would scoop up some slop and place it on our plates. We didn't really have to eat it (I don't think it was even safe to eat!) then along the way was a dumpster so we all dumped out "breakfast" in the trash. After that they made us sit in rows in the hangar bay as we waited to board the elevator which would take us up to the flight deck. While waiting they would take a hose and spray us down. We were all soaking in sea water and dirt. It was so nasty!Upon boarding the elevator we had to sit in rows and they sprayed us some more with sea water then we went up to the flight deck. We had to form circles and we had to do the hokey pokey and various other games. They also made us do more exercises bootcamp style. After that we went to another section of the flight deck and they had cardboard "boats" and we had to simulate replenishment underway then do an emergency breakaway. After that, we had to go through an obstacle course (more like a cardboard maze) and the floor was covered with green sea dye marker water. At the end of the maze was a giant tub filled with the green water in which we had to dive into and go from one end of the tub to the other. After that we had to wait our turn to go up and face King Neptune. We formed rows and bowed down and received our sentences. Then that was the end of it!My uniform was so disgusting that I ended up throwing it away! I kept the shirt for a souvenir.I wish I could have taken pics but they wouldn't let us. It is very interesting!

Oh yeah... nonskid HURTS! Brand new nonskid is razor sharp and can really mess you up if you trip and fall on it.For those who don't know what nonskid is, imagine cement that has been brushed up while wet then let to dry. The result would resemble jagged little mountains of cement and this would be all over. As for the cut up firehose, nah we didn't get any of that. The new Navy is kinder and gentler and anything of that nature would be considered hazing and you could get in trouble for it.My dad (a retired Navy chief) used to tell me stories of when he went through the initiation and I'll just say I'm glad I wasn't in the Navy back then!

well since we're talking about initiation thingy's.. I'm as some people know in the airborne, and new guys to the unit are called cherry's till they jump once in division. we used to have a kevlar that we had spray painted BRIGHT RED and stuck 550 cord on it for the stem. and then when we were getting ready for the jump we would terrify the cherry's with horror stories. and when we would hook up to the anchorline cable we we all yank on it screaming all sorts of things at the cherry and then when the cherry was about to exit we would give him a good smack on the (removed) just to make him jump a little farther. then we have the field initiations, such as koalaifying, and worm guard. Koalifying is where we have the soldier climb onto a tree upside down, that most of the time around fort bragg happen to have charcoal as they burn off the foliage every 2 years. Usually they have to last 7 minutes. however they always try to beat the record which is currently just over 33 minutesworm guard is where we put the soldier into his sleeping bag and make him crawl between the guard points his first night in the field with the unit

Secure a buildingGeneral Joe Whigham is ordered by the Secretary of Defense to gather together a Navy Lieutenant and Captains from the Army, Marine Corps, and Air Force to discover why the services have trouble communicating with each other. He begins by saying that their first project task is to "secure" a certain building, and asks each of them to go home and prepare a list of steps for the project management plan and bring them to the meeting the next morning. The Navy Lieutenant calls his Master Chief and says:Tell those swabs to:-- Unplug the coffeepots-- Turn off the computers-- Turn out the lights-- Lock the doors and leave the building unoccupiedThe Army Captain has his list in his notepad:-- Assemble the company-- Appoint guard mount and Sergeant of the Guard-- Take control of all exits-- Make sure no one gets into the building without a passThe Marine Corps Captain writes down her steps on palm of her hand:-- Assemble the platoon and supplies-- Approach the building along three axes-- Bring the building under mortar and SAW fire-- Assault the building under covering fire-- Sequester surviving prisoners-- Establish lanes of fire-- Prepare artillery calls-- Repel counterattacksThe Air Force Captain types his list into his laptop:-- Contact real estate agent-- Negotiate 1-year lease-- Be sure to get option to buy

Is it too late to reply to this thread?I was in the Navy for 11 years as a nuclear machinist mate, engineering lab tech. I was stationed on a Trident sub in WA for 6 six years and then went to GA for 3 yrs to work at the Trident Refit Facility in the Radiological Controls shop. I also was a shellback. We went thru the Panama canal, and our CO got permission to go south a few extra miles to cross the equator. It's pretty unusual for a Trident sub to go below the equator.I got out as an E6 and have never regretted leaving. I had my first child on shore duty, and I didn't want to have to go back to sea while my kids were growing up. I got out in May 2002.

I'm due to get out of the Navy as an E-5 Aviation Electronics Technician after 7 1/2 years in 2 months and am scared ****less! I have no idea where I'm going to work or how I am going to pay bills. I need a pretty decent job to keep up with the bills I've, but without a degree I don't think that is going to be so easy to find. Another problem is I don't plan on staying here in SD, so I may have to leave my wife and kid here and go back to Dallas and find a job while she stays here with her mother and finishes her Masters degree.

Two of my college roommates are in the Army National Guard, and spent over a year in Iraq, driving supply convoys from Kuwait to Baghdad. My sister-in-law is finishing training to be in the Army band. They have to go through basic even though you'll be in the band. (Also, just in case you don't make it into the band, they can give you a rifle instead) She'll be stationed in Washington state in March.A high school friend of mine was in the Navy for a short time. He was a store clerk on his ship. The only thing I remember him telling me was their ship was backup for the coast guard in the Pacific catching drug-runners.

Have you gone to TAP class yet? That should help answer some concerns for you.I was contacted by Orion when I got out, and they got me a job working out at Intel as a tech. Nukes are in pretty high demand, but ETs are also sought after. Just remember that when you get out, the Navy will give you a one-time move to any distance equal to your home of record. I got out in GA and my hor was WA, so I had the choice of the whole country. This is a great asset for you, so make sure that you get a job set-up and plan your move ahead of time.Remember also that you can always extend for a couple months. Talk to your career counselor, and depending how long you've been on shore duty, you may be able to extend a few months on shore. And don't sell your leave back. You make alot more money by going on terminal leave. It is scary getting out. I was lucky that my wife is in a great profession. Feel free to IM or email me and I can try to answer any questions you might have.Damon

i recommend making sure you can afford to get out. like frosty said, tap classes will help out. if things are on the west coast like they are in the east cost, then technical recruiters will come in and talk to you about different options. i tried them, finally ended up with one that wasn't at tap classes. CMC technical. they got me a job, ofcousr it took me quite a while. i got by with savings and unemployment.i HIGHLY RECOMEND finishing a degree. even if you're going to be working full time, you can still make time to go to college. don't get stuck on whatever job you first get. i plan to start college in a couple of month.i work with STERIS. they are a country wide steralizer products and service provider. i maintain life science steralizers. i think i got lucky. i've gotten a new company car, and full benefits.comopetative pay too. i don't plan on making a career off it.school baby!

I have no idea where I'm going to work or how I am going to pay bills. Welcome to my world of hurt. I did nearly the same job in the air force, and without an additional 2 years of school to get your Airframe and Powerplant license and schooling, you won't get the same job. If you want the same job you have now, get to a school ASAP. Otherwise, grab any "security clearance" job you can. I found a test technician job testing and refining occupant detection systems. I have been out a year, and now I'm totally screwed. Thank you Force-Shaping!If you can, get a reserve-technician job. Civilian paid when not activated, and active duty paid when activated.
