Labrum Surgery

Post by BOZACK »

Hi all. I just had surgery Monday to repair a torn labrum ligament in my left shoulder. I am doin' ok but can't use my arm for at least three weeks. Of course, I am left handed. Try doing all those personal tasks with your week hand. It is not easy. Not those tasks, pervertes, washing and brushing your teeth. Very hard. Cooking is tough with one hand too. This is going to be a very uncomfortable month, to say the least. The sad part is I have not driven in almost a week. It has been raining all week too. I am afraid to go out in this weather with one hand to steer with. Just wanted to let you all know, some already know, surgery sucks.

Being left handed I am somewhat ambidextrous. But there are some things I do exclusively left and right handed. It is those things I will develope over the next two to three weeks. It dosn't really hurt ay this time. Getting drunk is not an option. I have two screws with threaded loops in my shoulder that the ligament is sewn to. I can't lift my arm for fear of tearing those stitches out and undoing the surgery. Being drunk might make me stupid and lift my arm.And I can hear my Vibe crying for me to drive it. Not until it stops raining.

I had the same thing done on my shoulder a couple years back. I was stuck in an immobilizer sling for 2 weeks. I relearned to to just about everything except for tying my own shoes. Also, using the phone and computer at the same time in the office sucked. Oh yeah, not to mention driving a stick shift! And you're right about having to be VERY careful with breaking the surgery. I popped my ligament just 2days after the surgery from flinching when the cat tried to play with me.

And did they have to redo the surgery when you popped the stitch?

The screws will desolve after a year.

Physical therapy techs gave it the benefit of a doubt that it was still alright and that it didn't really pop out and excercises would make up for it. They were wrong. A year later my shoulder still had the same aches and pains as before the surgery. I just haven't pursued it since. I've learned to live with the aches. It took about a year before I was fully back into weightlifting again. But yours may be shorter. I also had a repaired bicep tendon that needed to heal. Here's wishing you a speedy recovery!I know how you feel about not being to use your arm. I had a somewhat similar experience. Four years ago I underwent oral surgery and my mouth ended up being wired shut for 6 weeks! I was on a liquid diet the entire time since I couldn't open my mouth and lost so much weight I ended up weighing 80 lbs after the 6 weeks. It was also awkward to retrain myself to eat solid foods after being on a liquid diet for so long. You're going to have an awkward time trying to move your arm again, but you'll eventually get it.

(No offense meant to PT's out there.)My (now 87 year old) mother-in-law had similar surgery on her left shoulder about 5 years ago after a fall. She recovered 95% motion, but only about 50% strength -- she still can't pull the seat belt across with her left arm when seated in the passenger seat.
