I just recieved a letter in the mail today citing that I stole $54 dollars of gasoline from a gas station. Just so everyone knows, I own only a Dodge Shadow and a Pontiac Vibe. Both of which have gas tanks around or under 13 gallons. I couldn't help but laugh since I am the most honest person you could meet, and also the fact that there is no possible way to steal 54 dollars of gas in either of my cars. I will be contacting the police tommorow, and I am sure they will see my side.

How did they track you down? I'm assuming that a theft took place at the same time you were getting fuel. That's just insane. It should be obvious that you can not put THAT much gas in the Vibe... You're really pushing it to get mid $30 range in most places for premimum when you're running on fumes! Good luck! And I hate to hear this happen to you.

Both should only hold around 32$ of petrol, my GTO holds 50$ of fuel, have the authorities look for a GTO!

Let us know what happens and good luck dealing with the badges.Problem is, I may as well pay the money they say I own because I'll have to miss work otherwise. That just can't happen. I was in that area before, so mabey I swiped my card and it didn't accept and pumped anyway? Mabey there is a 20 dollar fee, and thats why they say its so much. I would never do something like this on purpose, and I really think I paid free and clear. Have to check my charges....

I'm assuming that a theft took place at the same time you were getting fuel.Just called the police department and the woman who answered was very polite. She said that it happens a lot now that you can "pay-at-pump" with a card, and people don't always watch to see if it gets authorized before pumping. I am a creature of habit though and I always get my reciept after I pump, even if I have to go inside. So I say, "there is no way I could fit that amount of gas in my car". It turns out the vehicle described was a blue Dodge Durango, and the plate reported accidentally was mine. I am waiting for the officer in charge of my case to call me to confirm everything. Wheew!

Good deal. Glad you got that straightened out.I've just been waiting for this to happen to me. I use my check-card all the time and am often filling up in the morning on the way to work so I can just see someone thinking I'm driving off without paying.

Must have happened around the same time I stole 19 gallons of gas with a 13 gallon tank by accident. Thanks Joatmon, now I have a new tag.

I make it a habit to always say yes to the receipt question if the pump asks... But if it doesn't print, sometimes I'm too lazy to go in the store and demand a reprint. At any rate, whether I had the receipt printed at the pump or reprinted inside, I would always throw it somewhere and it eventually gets thrown away. I may be a bit more careful.

Well, the police department never called me back like they were suppose to. I called them 3 more times and they finally called me back. Turns out they already dropped the case against me because they found the RIGHT license plate number was registered to the blue Dodge Durango. The gas attendant reported my plate number, which was 1 letter different from the guilty person. Would have been nice for them to call and say the warrant for my arrest (as of Oct 14th) was lifted. It was bad enough they didn't check my license plate registration to see that my vehicle did not at all match the one in question. Oh, and I have never been to the gas station in question either. Thanks for your support everyone.

Well, at least your done with it. Figures that you would have to nag them to find out if there is still a warrant out for your arrest. Glad to hear your in the clear.

Good to hear it was easily resolved. But I agree with Bozack, get it in writing. If they won't send you a letter, send them one restating the facts and that it was dropped.
