Anyone here have a router hooked up to their Verizon Online DSL modem?I spent several hours this weekend attempting to set up an Asante FR2003 router with mine so I could share it between PCs. But I could never get the router to make the PPPoE connection through the modem (set up as bridge). In fact, I could never even see the modem through the router.Just spent a lot of time going

I'm not too familiar with the Asante brand equipment, I deal primary with Linksys routers at work for our remote users who have cable/DSL. Regardless, they work similarly. I looked up a few items through google and found the majority of Verizon's modems are setup in a way that the router cannot easily be connected, at least through PPPoE.Reading this blog entry, I noticed he ended up setting his router to DHCP (obtain IP address automatically). The router will then obtain it's own IP from the DSL modem, then your clients attached to your router will obtain their IP's from the router itself. Ultimately you will have the DSL modem continue to authenticate via PPPoE, set the router to obtain an IP automatically (DHCP), and you should be set.I've done this before with other DSL carriers and it appeared to work correctly, however not the way ultimately desired (ie. having the router authenticate via PPPoE). I've noticed more and more DSL carriers switch their equipment to act this way.Let us know.-NickEdit: reworded a sentence for more clarity
Yea i agree, i recommend trying to have the router do DHCP. when installing it, unplugg the router and modem and have the pc's off too. Then plug the router in and let it boot up, then have all the ethernet/phone cable connected and plug the modem in and let that boot. then turn on the pc and if its windows click the start button then go to run then type in "cmd", and press enter at the command prompt type"ipconfig"and it will show you if the pc is getting a ip from the router and also say a connection-specific DNS suffix which should state ur isp. Then try logging into your router following its included instructions and see if the router is getting a ip address from the modem. let us know how its going!
Thanks everyone for your replies. One question: when setting up to have the router get an IP via DHCP from the modem, should the modem mode be set to "routed bridge" or just "bridge"? (I'm guessing the former but not sure)Thanks!

Thanks to all you guys who replied. You're all geniuses.I posted on an Asante forum, but only got one reply that was not nearly as understandable as what you guys wrote. On a whim I posted here too.Verizon sells a Linksys router, which is the only one supported through their tech support. The documentation for setting up the router says to set up the modem in bridge mode, and configure the router to connect through it with PPPoE. This is what I had been trying with zero success. After reading your posts, I noticed the PC was set up get it's address through DHCP (from the modem). So I left the modem as is (routed bridge), set up the router to DHCP it's address from the modem as you guys suggested, and made sure the router DHCP server was enabled.Voila! Worked immediately. Both PCs on the 'Net! This site rocks. Gold stars for everyone
