How much do you guys pay for an oil change ?

Post by djpositivek »

I only have 2000 kms on my new Vibe but I'm thinking about my first oil change. I might go the synthetic route (prob. Mobil 1) and thought that I might get the dealer to do the oil changes anyway just so they could keep track and do any other maintenance at the same time etc...Anyway they want $20 CAN to change the oil if I have my own oil & filter. Not sure what they charge for the oil change including filter and their standard oil but $20 seems pricey just for the labour. For those that change the oil yourselves, how can you prove that it was changed at proper intervals for warranty purposes ? I'm not very handy but might attempt to do it myself if it's gonna cost $20 a shot.

It should be in your owners manual. Look in there. The oil changes at the dealership costed me, one time fee of $36 US. This is using their filter and oil. Think it was an AC Delco filter and Valvaline oil

Most places charge $30 - $35 CDN for a basic dino-juice oil & filter change. Synthetic is double that or slightly more.I do it myself using Mobil1 synthetic and Toyota filters - total cost $34.00I'm out of the 60k warranty so I'm not too concerned about it, but I keep full records of exactly when it was done and with what. If that would help if warranty work was needed on the engine? don't know.... but I like and just feel better doing it myself. If you really want to protect the warranty, pay a shop to do it. $20 is about right for labour time for an oil change.

I change the oil myself. In the US, the warranty is only 36K miles, and I ran through that in 13 months. I record oil changes, but didn't worry about being able to prove to a dealer that it had been changed.

To prove you have done your oil changes just keep the bills which are dated and record your mileage on them. That's what I do. It costs me about $17.00 per change. Most places charge for oil, lube and filter but on the Vibe there is nothing to lube but they don't give you a discount.

For my 2003 Vibe the Pontiac Dealer has an oil change club where you get 10 oil changes for $119.95 (plus tax but no shop charges added). For my T&C the dealer sold me when I bought the vehicle a 10 oil change package for $100 plus tax and no shop charges. Goodyear dealer runs special coupon $19.95 for LOF and tire rotation and I have used that when time for rotating tires. I made my semi-annual trip to Wal-Mart tonight and the guy in front of me was buying an oil change pan, oil etc. At these prices how can you justify changing your own oil. The oil and filter has got to be $10.

Around $12 since I do it myself. I always use a AC Delco filter on my GMs in case they do have to go in for warranty or Mopar for my Chrysler/Jeeps. Unless the dlr sends the oil out for analysis, there is no way they can tell how long it has been in the car. They also can look at the filter and it rusty, it probably has been on the car too long.

$9.95 GM filter and oil

My dealer charges $9.95 for an oil change with GM filter and oil PLUS a wash. Catch is you have to buy them in a six pack, but they don't expire.

Well went to the dealer for fist oil change and it was like $42.99 including taxI think I might go to Costco next time. For that price I can get Synthetic or do the regular for half the price almost.

$42.99 including tax? That's pretty high for an oil change! I get mine changed at Sears for $20.00. I get to shop around at the mall while I wait!

Bought at McPhee's in Dartmouth since Carroll's (Bedford Highway) didn't have much selection. Went to Carroll's for the oil change since it's in a much more convenient location. I think both dealers charge the same price for an oil change but I'm not sure.

Carroll charges $43. for an oil change. I only went there because it is the first oil change and I did buy the car there. Will probably give them the business for the first year.By the way have you or do you plan to install winter tires? I am still debating based on the threads. I'm thinking with our wet winters in NS I might be able to get by for the first year with the original goodyears.

Wow. Time to mosey to a different dealer. They want $90 (CDN) for a synthetic change. That's about the same price as the quick lube places around here. I can get it done myself for about $50 (Fram synthetic filter + oil), but living in a condo makes that difficult). I might have to check costco.

Go to Wal-Mart and buy Mobil 1 synthetic for $28 a jug.And the filter costs $3.83,so 32 bucks out the door with taxes.I would do my own for that price.

The dealer here was offering a change with synthetic oil and filter, including labor for $40 plus tax. I'm out of warranty so do my own oil changes. Did my last change with Mobil-1 and PureOne filter for $23.66 USD. Add a new Air Filter and it came to $34.14. I do it every 6,000 miles. Like others I prefer doing it myself. Old oil is disposed of free at most any auto parts store.

The local dealer here has been running coupons for $4.95 oil/filter changes all summer. So I had the oil changed by them in both Vibes at the beginning of the summer and will take one of them in again next week. At five bucks it's cheaper than doing it myself.

I do it for cost, I just bring it to my shop, throw it up on the hoist, check everything else out, and away I go... but for a normal oil change we charge $30-$35, that includes looking over the rest of the car, and vaccuming the interior and cleaning the outside windows.

It is only at extremely cold temperatures that 0W30 really shines in that it flows better than a synthetic 5W30.

More oil myths, they just never end. You can find 0W30 in synthetic only. 5W30 obviously is available in the dino version. 0WXX and 5WXX flow better at any temp below normal operating temp than 10WXX does. Has little to do with extreme cold temps. http://63.240.161.99/motoroil/

Not sure which myths you are referring to in this thread.Of course a 0W30 does well where ever a 5W30 was specified...summer or winter. But for a great range of temperatures a syn 5W30 does flow better than say the much vaunted German Castrol 0W30. It is only at very low temps...colder than -40F that GC 0W30 clearly surpasses a syn 5W30.

Forget about German Castrol 0W30, there are other synthetic 0W30 oil brands readily available. The MYTH is, someone posted that they live in a hot climate and 10W30 would be better than the factory recommended 5W30 'cause it would provide more cushion for moving parts. Again that's just pure myth. Anytime you run an oil with a lower first number, the oil will flow quicker to dry parts in the top of the motor at start-up than a higher first number oil. And again, 0W30, 5W30, 10W30 are the same viscosity (thickness) at 212F as straight 30 weight but the lower first number multi-vis oils will lubricate quicker at start-up where most engine wear occurs.Virtually any 0W30 will surpass 5W30 at -40F mainly 'cause 0W30 is synthetic oil. Some really good reading.http://63.240.161.99/motoroil/

Dude, that's cool, use whatever oil you want, just quit perpetuating the myth that 10W30 is better in hot weather than 5W30. And guess what, Toyota now recommends 5W20 or 0W20 in a number of their '06 and newer engines, but what the heck do they know. They just took the guess work out of what oil to use in your Vibe by printing 5W30 on the oil cap.
