Accident Procedure Question

Post by Cougar Vibe »

This is sort of OT, since it doesn't involve my Vibe (thank goodness), but I thought I might troll for info here anyway...My Ranger was "softly" rear-ended last week, with the damage consisting of a scratch in some of the plastic on the bumper and a few paint gouges on the passenger side rear quarter panel. In other words, entirely cosmetic damages. I just started the claim process with the other party's insurance (she hit me from behind while I was stopped at a red light) and naturally they are asking me to get my damage appraisal done at one of their recommended vendors. Now that's no big deal since I can get the work done anywhere I want, but what I really want to do is fix it myself and pocket the difference. Since I've never been involved in a car accident, is this allowed (that is, settling on an appraisal with the insurance company, getting the check, and then not getting the repair done professionally)? If this had happened to my new car, I naturally would get it fixed professionally. However, my Ranger is seven years old and has a fair number of other scratches and I can't see how it's worth it to have someone fix that little area. All things being equal, I'd rather just take the insurance check, buy a decent orbital buffer, assorted polishing compounds and waxes, and some touch-up paint and do it myself. Thanks for any replies,Cougar Vibe

Last summer I found myself in a simular situation, older truck was damaged, cosmetic only, I only wanted the $. I was asked to get 3 estimates and submit them. Boy was I supprised how much these estimates could be. I submitted the 3 highest estimates and told them I wanted it fixed at the "highest place" and would like the check mailed to me. This was basicly no problem, except that estimate was just over some magic $2,500 number (which required some bigger approval I think). So they had there apraiser look at and cut me a check for just under the $2500.I would get 3 estimates at places you "would" want the work to be done, stating these are the shops that you prefer. You would only need to show the insurance company this if there appraiser is too low.Just my 2 cents.
