is it poosible to swap trannys

Post by rlfreese »

Is it possible to put the 6 speed in a base vibe. I figure this will add a little more low end torque since the gears will be shorter. the 5 speed is too long in 1st and 4th.

I doubt it, since the 6 speed is intended for an entirely different engine. I'm pretty sure something like this has been addressed before on the board...a search for things having to do with putting the GT transmission in a base might turn up the info you're looking for.

i think an interesting mod would be installing a stick shift into the awd model.actually vertically inserting a v8 or high output v6. the shaft is already there. it would just need to be moddified into the new tranny."if you have the money and time, it will be done"

I would put a LSD into a 6 spd tranny, then swap it out.Yes , I believe it will swap right out. My turbo kit installer has done this verry thing on a celica, and it bolted right up. He took out a 5 spd from a celica gt, and put in a 6 spd from a celica gts and it bolted right in, very easily he said. As you may know the celica GT has the base Vibe 1zz motor, and the celica gt-s has the Vibe gt 2zz motor. Furthermore, the Vibe gt, Matrix xrs, and the celica gts have the same tranny . the model is the c-60. the celica gt and the mr2spyder have the samme 5 spd, it is the c56. (even though the spyder is rwd). The Matrix/vibe/corrolla (2003+) have the c59 5 spd. The only difference between the c-56, and the c59 is the gearing. The housing is identical. I dont have the gear ratios in fron of me, but the difference between the c56 and the c59 is 3rd and 4th gear. In the Vibe 3rd is taller than the celica, and so is 4th. In the Vibe, 4th gear is an over drive gear, where in the celica it is indeed a 1:1 ratio. Soooooooo, even the celica 5spd is more performance friendly than the vibe 5spd. It is one reason that we get better gas mileage. If you are gunna swap, i would get the six speed from a salvage yard, and if you can afford it, put in a limited slip differential, and you will have a very nice set up indeed!!!

Would it be easier to just put on tires with smaller overall diameter? Seems like that would have a similar effect on final gear ratio, gas mileage and speedometer error. Would give you more effective torque, but might look odd. Like running with four emergency spares on the car. I've thought about putting on bigger tires, to increase gear ratio, hurt torque, but as a possible attempt to get higher mpg. If only there was a way to calibrate the speedometer ...

If only there was a way to calibrate the speedometer ...I actually did this one when I had the stock 16's on. I think I put on 205 40 16's. The diameter is only 22.5" where the stock size is 24.9" or 25.0 even depending whose chart you are reading. (225 50 16, 205 55 16, 225 45 17, and 225 40 18 ) all have that same diameter. Interestinly , the factory 215 50 17 is a little bit larger. Anyway, with the smaller front wheels, I could feel the difference. 1st gear did seem lower. The rest of the gears did too. I already had my turbo on, and I felt like I had more power in 4th gear than other wise, and that was good. I liked the whole idea better because I thought I was less likely to break something with the lower gearing. The down side was traction. The smaller wheel created less of a contact patch I guess. Another thing was that the front end was very low for an already lowered car, and I kept hitting stuff on the road. Maybe an upside was that the speedometer was reading faster than I was actually going to keep me out of trouble In the end , i did not like it so well, and it did look a little odd. That is when I bought my 17's and have kept standard sizing

they are interchangle between cars.a celi tranny will bolt up fine. but some of the mounting points for stuff on it is different for the matrix..for a n/a car this mod isnt worth the effort because our powerband isnt suited for the gearing.but for a forced inducted 1zz it works good.in fact c2 power sells a super strong upgraded 6 speed gearset and lsd they reccomend for turbo 1zz unfortunatey you still have to source a six speed housing.they have been doing this forever over on http://www.newcelica.org . btw what does poosible mean?
look my sniggies, i had a strizz-oke in my brizz-ain okay, you know what im saying. so i cant move all good. but thanks for mentioning that .thank you very much.athf4evr. click here! you know you want to!!!
