Stainless Steel nuts and bolts, to prevent rust.

Post by navydave »

I am considering changing out all of the visible exterior nuts and bolts that I can see that might be exposed to the weather to Stainless steel to try to keep them from rusting. Has anyone else did this or thought of this?

Just to let you know, stainless steel will rust when exposed to the ellements. It jus takes longer. I am not saying it's a bad idea at all. I think it is a good idea myself. I just don't want you to be suprised when there is rust on the bolts.

Hmm, I wonder how long it would take. I know that the Delorian's outer shell is made with stainless steel and I've heard that will never rust, or not for a very long time. I know that they recommend putting an anti-sieze compund on the threads to prevent galling. I found a website that has all stainless steel kits for different vehicles, mostly older and antique, but they must have individual hard to find bolts. (http://www.totallystainless.com/). On thier site they claim (Stainless is a series of alloy steels which contain at least 12% chromium. Such steels will not rust when exposed to weather. ). I'm sure after years and years and in very salty environments it may rust, but like you said, probably not for a very long time. I wonder if they would outlast the car?

I am curious about which nuts and bolts you are considering changing. There are not to many outer visible nuts and bolts that are exposed to the elements, maybe the front inner fender liner screws.
