Holden and Toyota

So I drive a 05 GTO (Blk on Red 6M) and we just replaced my wifes old Honda Civic with a 05 Vibe (Silver, M&T, 17inch wheels). A buddy of mine made a comment that the only reason I bought these 2 cars were because they weren't really Pontiac's. Now we are both really happy with our cars and if we had it to do over agian we would make the same choice.......anyway just intresting food for thought....????

sounds like someones buddy is jealous!!! the vibe is a kick (removed) car and the GTO is a super awesome fast car. nice cars! got any pics?

Isn't Holden a GM brand in Australia though?

True ...however his comment was really based off the fact that Holden all though owned by GM is as much "Pontiac" as the Saab. He had some smart remark about the Grand Prix and Aztek..... My argument was that GM ...or Pontiac was moving in the right direction....GTO, Vibe, G6, G6 Coupe.....Soltice... Heck if Holden can breath life back into the GTO and now the Impala...I am all for it.....BTW see the Commodore SSZ ...nice

I will go for the jelousy vote as well. Here you have two nice new cars and he is still driving around his 1980 Dodge Colt.

I also vote for jealousy. I own an '04 GTO and an '03 Vibe GT and I bought them both because they were Pontiacs, since we can't buy Holden's over here and I don't get employee discounts on Toyota. I also like Pontiac styling.

holden is owned by GM. basically an arm of GM. there's no way that can be bad. All car makers make cars and take them somewhere else and calls them something else. Toyota and Lexus... the lexus that they sell here are marketed as toyotas in japan. He just wanted something to say to make himself feel better.the vibe and toyota... so what?? the entire project wasn't completed by toyota.yeah.. he's jelous. i'd love to drive a GTO.

Nice choice of cars , how many GTO/Vibe people are here? Are any of you on the GTOforum.com? I love my vibe though, not that I dont like the Goat, but my wifes Vibe gets 30 mpg and has an actual "boot"!! Two vehicles, so high build quality for GM, we are very fortunate .

the fact he does make though is that the GTO can in no way be confused with a pontiac sourced here... right down to its blaupunkt radio.all the GTO reviews have commented on teh fit and finish of the gto being superb. you dont hear that about a grand am.same can be said about a vibe.i am a die hard pontiac guy... but there is a point there... but not enough to say you didn;t buy pontiacs... you did.but pontiac does add their own touches. holden didnt have an ls2 in there with true dual exhaust.

Well, to be honest...the main reason I bought the Vibe was because I felt more confident about the Toyo engine/tranny/AWD than I did about other Pontiac (or GM/Ford/Chrysler) products. The final straw for me, besides gas mileage issues, was mechanical realibility and quality. My previous car was a 2000 Ford Explorer that went through numerous visit to the dealership to fix too many problems on a five year old vehicle. Oil and compression leaks, belt tensions that didn't work, all sorts of brake issues, rust on bumpers and running boards, leaks in window seals, the whole Firestone tire fiasco, and lastly the poor fit & finish of interior parts. And it's not like I'm one of those people that drop $25K on a car and then ignore it; I washed it weekly, waxed it every other month, changed oil/filter every 3K, actually took it to the dealer for all scheduled mechanical maintenance, detailed the interior once a month, etc. And I drove the thing VERY gentlly too! It was the worst American-branded car I've every owned...and that says something considering I went through three Chrysler transmissions on my '98 Stratus in less than two years. Now considering I haven't owned too many Japanese cars, maybe I'm relying a little too much on their quality reputation (or as others might say, "quality hype")...but I figure I can't do worse. Prior to buying my Vibe, I was looking at a Corolla S, a Civic Hybrid, a Forester and a Jetta TDI (which was NICE but $24K); however, with the GM pricing hoopla and their various cash back/allowances, I couldn't beat the features for the money. Plus, as mentioned before, the Toyota drive-train and assumption of quailty assembly. That's why I bought my Vibe.

Rather, the Explorer was the last link in a long chain of various domestics that I've owned. My wife made a pretty good point to me about Japanese vs. American car companies: You hardly ever see the huge rebates/incentives/cash back programs from Japanese car companies that you do with American ones. It's because they offer products that people really want...for whatever reason (reputation for quality, gas mileage, etc.). All that being said, I do have respect for my old '98 Ford Ranger (ie, "The Lowes/Home Depot Mobile"). It is has been very reliable and does exactly what I expect it to do...and that's all I ask of my cars.Cougar Vibe
