Painted engine cowl

I have seen several pic's of people that have painted parts of the engine compartment, like the plastic engine cover. Was just wondering what type of spray paint u used? I assume it would have to be heat resistant and able to bond to plastic well.

high engine heat enamel and i suggest using the wet sanding and primer method. also a couple layers of clear coat will help make it more durable.

Don't use plasti-kote's "ANODIZIT" paints. They SUCK!

actually if you do a searh on painted engine covers you'll see what a lot of people did and what they used.

I used Duplicolor High Heat engine spray paint. They have 500 degrees and 1200 degres availible. I used the 1200 for the paint and 500 for the clear coat. the 1200 is not nessisary but that's all they had. There arn't a huge variety of colors but it works really well I think and looks awsome. There's a descent picture of my engine bay in my cardomain site below if you're interested in seeing it.I think I am going to respray my heat shield gunmetal and buy red grafxwerks VVT-i stickers instead of the red. I also need ot buy a new coolant cap and washer fluid cap. I painted those red and it looks dumb so need to buy new ones.

so you just painted right over your red with primer and then the silver? That beats the hell outa sanding off the red...Maybe I'll try to find some gunmetal paint today.

no, i wet sanded the red first, then applied primer. watched to see how it reacted with the paint. then wet sanded that, another layer of primer, wet sand, watch the reaction, etc. layered the primer until i saw no reaction (bubbling of the paint) and then applied 3 layers or so of the paint, then the clear.

ew....long and drawn out lol. ill just sand off all the paint that sounds less time consuming.

engine paint should sufficient. like somebody else said, get clear coat too. 3-4 coats should be fine for the paint. then after some drying time. 6-7 coats of clear coat. i wouldn't worry about sanding it neither. either degreaser, or dish soap. get it really clean and go at it. p.s. make sure you remove it from the car also.

Hmmm...I forgot to put down primer before the paint now that I think about it...lol, I'll figure it out later.

Well i had some free time this weekend so i painted the engine cowl and the fuse box, the blue i found does not match the car paint, but it turned out nicely, just need to get a couple of those decals for the raised lettering and should be all set

i just painted it at the body shop i work at. normal car paint sealed, based, and cleared looks good after about 7 months

That's a good idea. The friend of mine that paitned my roof caps has extra paint left over that he thinned so I can use it as touch up paint. I'm thinking maybe I could use it on my heat shield and fuse box and vacuum unit cover or whatever that thing is.Would that be fine as far as resisting the heat? It should be since car paint is exposed to the sun and reaches pretty high temps. during the summer.Lets see pics of yours Darc and Raivis...

i believe psychobroker had his done professionally. had i thought of it at the time i had my interior done, i'd have done the engine covers under the hood too.

Finally updated the pictures on my photobucket account tom show the finished piece with the vvti decals on it

Looks nice - Blue with yellow letters stand out under the hood.Sure beats my all black engine compartment, cept for one bit of chrome... I need to paint mine before it gets cold out!
