Thule Sidekick

Post by Burstgoof »

There are a few discussions in the forums about rooftop cargo boxes. The smallest (and I think newest) box from Thule is called the SideKick. It's 8 cubic feet. Before I go drop the $150 for it, I was wondering if anyone has it installed. Did it fit out of hte box? Also, I'm not against other options - but I want something that fits the Vibe out of the box....a lot of what people have posted are custom things they've rigged together. I want a nice clean looking cargo box that also works properly. Thanks!

Took a look at Thule's website for more information about the Sidekick. The base price might be good, but it looks like you're forced to buy Thule's rack system to make it work. Also, that box looks pretty big for only 8 cu. ft.Another wierd thing is that, when you try to use their "RackYourCar" feature, it says, "Based on our product testing of your vehicle, we do not have a product in this category that we recommend for use."We've got a Yakima SpaceCadet and it works "right out of the box" on the Vibe. Holds 15 cu. ft. and retails for about $300 (but there is a Yakima rebate for $50 now at select dealers). It's been on a few trips and weathered them very well.

Thanks for the great recommendation. Although the Yakima Spacecadet is about twice the cost of the Thule Sidekick - the compatibility and, well, look of the Spacecadet (plus it's twice the size and only 3lbs heavier), seem to make it worth the extra $150 or so. Thanks again.(more suggestions welcome...)

I havent had experience with a roof carrier yet, but my dad always got them for his van/suv's and all we got was yakima's, they seem to be the easiest to use and install and most reliable. oh yea and he checks consumer reports for everything he buys.
