Got a new Router - now I need help!

Post by Sputnik »

I tried googling this, but I'm not getting quite the answers I'm looking for. Anyway as I've talked about before here, I have a linksys wireless-b router. Well I decided to upgrade to a D-Link Wireless G router. This should be easy, right? Well it seems that I can't quite get it working right. I have no computers connected directly to the cable modem because the cable does not go into the computer room. So the router and modem are in the basement and I bought a wireless card and wireless USB adapter for the laptop and desktop respectively. So I connect everything - I want to get it working before trying to do the wireless security on it. I think I'm connected to my network, but when I check the list of available networks there's like 5! And it won't connect to the one I want. Its connected to someone else's no matter what I do (I'm running WinXP SP1). So I disconnected the DLink Router and plugged back in the Linksys router. Its still connecting to someone else's wireless G DLink Router. How can I get it to connect to my network?Once I get that sorted out I want to get it secured. However last week when I tried securing my linksys network I couldn't get anything to work so I reset it and only have the MAC filtering enabled.

on my laptop, I get a wireless status icon in the system tray. If I double click on it, it brings up a wireless network connection properties window. In that window, it lists a bunch of wireless networks, a lot I don't recognize, but you can click on one, select Properties, and in the connectin tab uncheck the box that says connect automatically. That might help you not connect to the other ones, hopefully you can get to the one you want.

Is that in WinXP? Because I did like you said but I don't see that checkbox in the properties.

on my XP, therre is a Connection tab with the check box.If you don't have that, in the wireless network connection properties window, does it list the various netwoks it can see? If so, remove the ones you don't want, or at least move yours up to the top of the list.

Nope don't have that tab. And I can't remove any of the networks I see. I moved mine to the top of the list, yet it connects to "default."Actually I just changed my wireless network card from the DLink to the Linksys card and now most of the networks have disappeared and it is connecting to mine. This is only a temporary solution because I want to upgrade it all to my dlink stuff and dump the linksys...

you'll have to hook the router up direct to a pc at some point to set the network up. can't help much with Dlink, I stuck with Linksys, just swapped my b router for g a few weeks ago.

Yeah thats the problem. I can't connect the computer directly to the router... well I can for all of about 5 minutes when the laptop will die on its crappy (removed) battery. There are no outlets in my basement that are three-prong grounded (why, I have NO idea - we just moved here last week).

If you have windows xp home, it can cause issues when upgrading or changing network stuff. If xp home is on both pc's then run a file called "Winsock Fix" just google that or download it from http://www.majorgeeks.com . That will flush the dns and other network stuff from the old networks out. Then turn off both the modem and router1. turn the router back on after like 5 min or so2. connect the modem and turn onlet both load up and then if you dont have WEP on the router it should be putting internet out, so you then can connect through wireless to the router, then log into it and change all the wireless settings like WEP key, firewall etc.

Does it matter if one is XP home and the desktop is XP Pro?I don't have WEP on at the moment. As soon as I enable it, I can't connect anymore. Can't figure out why that is because I had it working in the condo before we moved.

winsock works on 2k and xp home and pro. But home is the one that @#$@# up with networking stuff. it holds the old settings ie. dns stuff and pro doesnt. with wep you'll have to put the wep key back on the pc's thats on the dlink router. Also decide if you want to use dlink software or windows xp software for wireless, as they can sometimes fight over the wireless conetion.
