HOLY COW!!! Katrina has really gained strength since it hit Florida. It was category 1, now it is a category 5!?! No kidding, all you unfortunate people in the south get the hell out of the way.
I was born and raised in New Orleans -and I am tracking this very closely.I have lots of friends down there.Rasermon -Thanks for the maps and where do you obtain them from. Can you provide a link so I may use it. If you can't --PLEASE keep posting updated maps. Thanks James
If you havn't filled your car up with gas, now might be a good time. Most of the crude oil for the US comes through a port near New Orleans. If the hurricane takes it out, it will take time to repair, replace it.

This will effect almost all of the east coast, much like Hurricane Ivan did. Everyone remembers what Ivan did, prepare for the worst, this storm will probably be worse than that.

Anyone that may be down in that area, may you and your families be safe throughout all of this. I'll be watching from up here... Here's an interesting site I've been keeping an eye on: http://www.nola.com/hurricane/

They're talking about 175+ mph winds, 25+ ft storm surges. The storm didn't hit yet, and it's already slated to be one of the worst to ever hit the US mainland.
YES!I still visit GenVibe periodically. I have not forgotten about my "original" family over here!
(Vibe) James,I to grew up in Nawlins, French Quater, Metaire, Kenner.I have been in a number of hurricanes, and many weather the storm partys over the years,But I would run from this one.Andrew was a blast, but katrina makes andrew look like "the devils beating his wife"for those of you who don't understand that term. It means raining during the sunshine.I'm lucky as to all of my family and friends have left.As I understand it Norco Shut down production yesterday, So gas will be shooting up soon.My family pray's for those who will have to ride it out, and of course the wonderful city of New Orleans itself.
No doubt the news has been showing people "I ain't leaving for no storm..."Lewis Black said it best "You pack your ****, and you LEAVE! If the kids to move fast enough - drive off with out them...."

Gas always goes up for some reason er'nuther. If it isn't a hurricane, it's a riot in some backwoods country CNN doesn't have an office in.

It's hard to imagine the 28-foot waves that were happening yesterday far before the hurricane even came on shore...that's a wave pretty much as tall as my apartment building...scary.

My wife is in Starkville MS, 60 miles south of Tupelo.Looks Like Mexigirl, kaleen, Greg100575, & barbell are in the current path, outside of everyone in the NO area, and lower AL, Florida's western panhandle.

TV is full of awful pictures of the devastation. Levee breaks flooding New Orleans, 80% underwater and still spreading. Wish we'd hear from folks down there that they are ok. Biloxi, where mexigirl is, got totally hammered.Quote, originally posted by tnpartsguy »cool beans, just thought I'd let you know.....thanks, I'll fix it the next time I update the file
I just got word from my Sister, Laplace La has some damage but no flooding or power.I think that is about where spongevibe is.It's located about 30mile west of the city.
Yesterday, when I saw a tree driven through one of those Land Rover things, I didn't get too upset. Today, I see the G6 and I wanna cry. A sad sight! But the bright side - Mike - you don't have to wait for GM to get the bugs worked out of the G6's roof now!

It could use a new windshield, but seeing how you've had oh, say, half a dozen or whatever replaced on your Vibe, you're probably used to that by now. Just remove the debris and she's good as new. BUT don't buy it if it's been exposed to saltwater!

Just a shot in the dark here, but I'm guessing that the GM plant that churns out that car doesn't utilize the same equipment, the same crappy paint, and the same techniques to apply the paint as NUMMI. Just a guess, I figure if they did, it would look like our cars up front. Anyway...

I don't have the specifics but I like what I hear thus far: I'm listening to CNN's coverage of the aftermath on Sirius at the moment, and they made a reference to the Big 3, albeit a quick one. They said that for the folks that had the misfortune of getting stuck in this mess will have 90 payment-free days. They didn't say on CNN if each of the big 3 is doing this, nor did they say they would do this no matter who the vehicle was financed through. They were just like "the big 3 say no payments for 90 days."Keep your eyes and ears open for any news on that, maybe we can get some more details. If that's true, pretty generous of them.

http://www.freep.com/news/stat...0.htmI just wonder how these people are going to contact the lending institute? If they can market to a particular area, they can also highlight that area to suspend payment demands. Also, Barbell was online for a few minutes, so that's another one that we can mark off as safe.

waiting to hear back from cousins in New Orleans. they don't think they have a house anymore. it was only 20 yards from the levy. good to see the banks are deciding to not be big jerks about this. plus, i'm sure they'll be happy with the good PR it'll give them. i remember back in 99-00, the bristol bay area fisherman had a devasting year. the bank gave them 6 mos no payments (but of course interest still compounded). but at least they weren't getting their homes taken away.

I really feel bad for what those poor folks are going through. As a visitor to New Orleans (been there 3 times!) my heart goes out to all there, what a wicked city, I hope you all bounce back real fast.A word from our Prime Minister:Statement by the Prime Minister on the aftermath of Hurricane KatrinaAugust 31, 2005Ottawa, OntarioPrime Minister Paul Martin today issued the following statement concerning the tragic results of Hurricane Katrina:“Like all Canadians, I am distressed by the destruction and loss of life wrought by Hurricane Katrina. On behalf of the Government of Canada and all Canadians, I offer our sincere condolences to the American people. During this most difficult time, Canada stands with you, and we are ready to provide whatever support you may require in the days, weeks and months ahead.“Even before the enormity of the devastation became clear, I asked Deputy Prime Minister Anne McLellan to lead the Government of Canada’s response to any requests for assistance. We are continuing to monitor the situation closely. I know that she and a number of her Cabinet colleagues have been in touch with their American counterparts and have begun to determine what assistance Canada can offer. We have made it clear that we are prepared to offer any and all possible assistance, and we will continue to work closely with our neighbours as they deal with this terrible event."

What kind of upsets me, is that when there is a world disaster like the tsunami and earthquakes, the US is there to help out anyway they can. For Katrina, I have not heard of any other country offering help (other than Canada). Reminds me of a 1973 broadcast from Canadian Gordon Sinclair:"The United States dollar took another pounding on German, French and British exchanges this morning, hitting the lowest point ever known in West Germany. It has declined there by 41% since 1971 and this Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least-appreciated people in all the earth. As long as sixty years ago, when I first started to read newspapers, I read of floods on the Yellow River and the Yangtse. Who rushed in with men and money to help? The Americans did. They have helped control floods on the Nile, the Amazon, the Ganges and the Niger. Today, the rich bottom land of the Misssissippi is under water and no foreign land has sent a dollar to help. Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy, were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of those countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States. When the franc was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it.When distant cities are hit by earthquakes, it is the United States that hurries into help... Managua Nicaragua is one of the most recent examples. So far this spring, 59 American communities have been flattened by tornadoes. Nobody has helped. The Marshall Plan .. the Truman Policy .. all pumped billions upon billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now, newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent war-mongering Americans.I'd like to see one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplanes.Come on... let's hear it! Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tristar or the Douglas 107? If so, why don't they fly them? Why do all international lines except Russia fly American planes? Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or women on the moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy and you get automobiles. You talk about American technocracy and you find men on the moon, not once, but several times ... and safely home again. You talk about scandals and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everyone to look at. Even the draft dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are here on our streets, most of them ... unless they are breaking Canadian laws .. are getting American dollars from Ma and Pa at home to spend here. When the Americans get out of this bind ... as they will... who could blame them if they said 'the hell with the rest of the world'. Let someone else buy the Israel bonds, Let someone else build or repair foreign dams or design foreign buildings that won't shake apart in earthquakes. When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke. I can name to you 5,000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake. Our neighbours have faced it alone and I am one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles.I hope Canada is not one of these. But there are many smug, self-righteous Canadians. And finally, the American Red Cross was told at its 48th Annual meeting in New Orleans this morning that it was broke. This year's disasters .. with the year less than half-over… has taken it all and nobody...but nobody... has helped."

Here is some great news, just got an email from back from hjwii, who is okQuote »After a harrowing night and day of hurricane weather, and a week of noelectricity, me an my family are doing quite well. We are grateful that allextended family evacuated New Orleans; however my parent's home and myoffices are in the French Quarter, thus we are unable to return at thistime. ...We were fortunate: our house isin one piece and dry, and we now have all the utilities back (I live 60miles from New Orleans, across the lake). Other than a few fell trees andsome settling of the house that makes closing the doors difficult, nodamage. And, the lil Vibe survives just fine (I wonder if I can claim allthe bad paint spots on the car as hurricane damage...hmmm). ....I do have one question: As I am currently unemployed (hopefully my job willbe there when the city opens) and I cannot call 800 numbers, perhaps youcould give me some insight on contacting GMAC about my monthly payments. Iwill need to either suspend or greatly reduce my payments until I knowexactly what's going to happen. Then, again, I suppose I could just go makea post, which I will do as soon as I have the time.Has anyone heard anything about GMAC's policy for helping out Katrina victims?

Just heard from Kaleen!Hi, and thanks so much for your email. My area was hit prettyhard, but it's mostly a matter of damage caused by fallingtrees (I'm not on the coast). Between the storm and a familymedical emergency I've not had time to check e-mail, or to postanything to GenVibe, though I've found the forum very useful(and I love my new Vibe). Thanks for your good wishes. Kathy Another one has checked in!! I'm so happy that we have heard from so many, and that so far we havn't lost anyone.
