Traversing the Great State of Indiana Today

Post by gargoyle »

Today I will be making a trip the entire length of Indiana. I'm leaving from Portage, IN (northwest corner of the state) with stops in Lafayette, Indianapolis, and Bloomington... the final destination is Owensboro, KY. Best guess is 400+ miles each way... so the Vibe's gonna get a work out.Maybe I'll make a photo documentary of the trip... or maybe not... depends on the weather, but it looks like rain all the way. Just my luck... we're in the middle of a drought, but the day I decide to take a trip, the entire state is covered in rain (weather channel 8:13am). doh!I think a quick application of Rain-X is in order.Oh well... I'll let you know how the Vibe performs. This is it's first long trip.05 Automatic... current milage: 3186

drive safe. Indiana is so flat you can probably see Kentucky on the horizon.

Na, you just see the hills that are down here at the very southern part of the state along the Ohio river. I wish it was as flat here as it is up north, I kinda dig being able to see miles and miles of nothingness. But it only takes a few miles to the north on 65 and it kinda starts to flatten out a bit. lolHave a safe trip, Gargoyle - and if you spot a neptune Vibe broken down alongside the road, stop by and say hi to me.

LOL! More than corn is right! That plant looks familiar... That looks like AEP's Rockport plant in Spencer County, along US 231, right?. Don't worry, not a nuke, just a coal fired plant with huge cooling towers... Now, if you wanna see a fine gem of a Hoosier nuke, I've got something of interest once I get home. And that bridge kicks (removed). I've been meaning to get down there and check it out, I haven't seen it since it was being built.Glad ya had a safe trip!

Ok... here's my trip recap:Beginning odometer: 3186 miles Ending odometer: 4049 milesTotal distance travelled: 863 milesStarted with a full tank, first fill up took 11.6 gallons, second fill up took 11.4 gallons, final stretch used a little less than 1/2 tank (estimated 5 gallons)863 miles ÷ 28 gallons = 30.82 mpg with a/c cranked the whole time, 75% highway (with cruise set at about 75 mph most of the time), 25% stop and go city driving. I'm happy with the mileage. The Vibe ran GREAT! Engine temp remained constant, the ride was smooth, acceleration was good, the cruise control ran steady most of the time, it only revved high a few times going up some hills. The seat & steering wheel were comfortably positioned for the long trip (although I would have loved a higher center arm rest... Dang it GM! why'd you change that?)So anyway... the Vibe performed great on the trip. The front end was plastered pretty heavily with bug guts, but after cleaning it and inspecting it, it held up good... no rock chips or scratches.Overall, it was a comfortable trip and I am completely happy with the Vibe.
