Corruption squad chief faces fraud allegations PAUL CHERRYThe GazetteFriday, August 19, 2005A high-ranking Montreal police officer in charge of investigating corrupt cops has been suspended without pay following fraud allegations. The officer, a commander in the special investigations squad, was suspended by police chief Yvan Delorme this week. Department sources say the officer has been the subject of an internal investigation based on allegations he used a credit card issued for police work to make personal purchases. The Surete du Quebec has taken over the investigation to determine whether the commander should face criminal charges."For me, the confidence and the respect that the citizens of Montreal have toward our police officers are fundamental elements of our work," Delorme said."When a police officer is suspected of having broken that confidence in association with committing a reprehensible act, I require that everything come to light with diligence in this case," Delorme added in the statement, which was made public yesterday. The office of Quebec Public Security Minister Jacques Dupuis is aware of the suspension, Delorme's statement said, adding internal disciplinary measures have been taken. The commander had been in charge of what other officers commonly refer to as "the rat squad," part of the Montreal police internal affairs division. According to its 2004 annual report, the squad had nine detectives working under the commander. It is responsible for criminal investigations into alleged activities by Montreal officers and officers from other police forces in Quebec. In 2004, the squad received 107 requests for investigations and filed criminal charges in three cases. While news that the commander had been suspended was made public yesterday, most officers in the Montreal police force learned of it Wednesday night. Some said they were shocked. The commander had a reputation as a dedicated, hardworking officer before he joined the special investigations squad a few years ago. Before moving to the internal affairs division, the commander, who is married and has children, was in charge of the Montreal force's north-end operations centre. While there, he regularly worked 12-hour days, a police source said."No one ever had a bad word to say about him. He was a solid guy," said a detective who worked under the commander years ago.A spokesperson for the Surete du Quebec said it received a request this month to open the fraud
