mpg goes down after injector cleaner was added

Post by SinisterMind »

Is it normal for the mpg to go down? I used the Chevron Techtron injector cleaner and the car got less than 30mpg. The car has about 40k on odo.

Probably, gotta figure that dirty injectors spray less gas, meaning it's using less air and making less horsepower.Clean injectors, spray more gas, engine pulls more air, makes more horsepower.

Is there still some of the injector cleaner in your gas? The reason I ask is that I noticed when I use it that my mileage drops a bit for the next couple of tanks until it's all out of the system. Also, once I put the Techron in my tank I usually drive it down as close to empty as I can prior to the next fill-up. BTW, how much did your mileage drop?

It's not a bid drop but went down from 32mpg to 28mpg. I have to check with my wife (she's driving it) if she still is seeing this behavior. There still might be that cleaner in the system since this is the first fill up after it was added.

i use the techron after every oil change religously have for years!! occasionaly the mileage will drop a tad BUT ONLY for the tank that has had it added...I almost always see a very small increase in mileage for the next serveral tanks before returning to normal....

timely post...my last tank had the injector cleaner and i noticed an increase in milage! In the past i've seen similar increases in milage with the tank containing the cleaner and for a couple tanks after.i'm using Canadian Tire Motomaster brand injector cleaner.

Never, i feel that most gas has enough detergents to keep it clean enough for my needs.

On many cars I have I have put injector cleaner in and it makes a noticable difference. My dad has a 05 escape and put some in and got better mileage and he only has like 16k miles on it.

You'd be better off using it in the tank previous to the oil change. Some will get into the oil,
