I did some looking through the owner's manual and didn't find anything about changing the belt/chain at a specific time. Most 4 bangers need the belt changed around 90,000 miles. Am I missing something?Sorry if this is a dumb question, new to the Vibe GT.

Well being toyota built... I could be wrong, but GM has been going towards electric timing on some of their vehicles. In all honesty, what the Vibe has, I don't know...

Just to clear things up a bit. I am talking about the belt/chain that runs off the crank to turn the cam shaft and any other components. Is it a belt or chain and when does it need to be checked/replaced.

These engines have timing chains, and there is no specified maintenance interval for them.looking over previous threads, such as http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id ... ?id=2122it seems as if these engines are non-interference, which means that even if the chain breaks, the pistons won't hit the valves.

Quote, originally posted by Vibe_dude »its a chain.i think honda is the only one that still uses belts.but i could be wrong. It's not company specific... most lower-end 4cyl engines use belts. Mostly on SOHC configurations.Although many are moving toward variable valve timing to squeeze all the HP they can out of these little buggers. Not that VVT requires a chain - but typically they run dual cams, which would probably thrash a belt pretty quickly.Chains are typically only replaced during engine overhauls. Although - as usual - some engines are different and have a specific replacement schedule.
