Is the 5 speed manual tranny the same in the Vibe and the Matrix?

Post by SBC31 »

I'm not very happy with the shifting in the 2005 Vibe, and was wondering if they use the same tranny as the Matrix, or is it a GM one? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the info... I did think they were the same, but am surprised how loose the shifter feels given it's from Toyota. Nothing like my Honda.

Auto here, so I wouldn't know. Drove a GTO one day though, that shifter was TIGHT! And I don't mean that in the street sense, as in tight = awesome, cool, hip, but as, that puppy shifts and snaps right into gear.

What exacty are you un happy about? The Vibe and matrix have a model # that is called the c59.The celica and the mr2 spyder have a 5 spd that is the c56. The difference is that in our Vibe/matrix tranny 3rd and 4th gear are different than the celica one. 1st , 2nd and 5th are identical. In the celica, 3rd is a little bit shorter and 4th gear is direct drive. In the Vibe, 4th gear is an over drive gear, just as 5th gear is. The celica , even though lighter, gets worse gas mileage than our car, and the gearing is part of the reason. If you want even more of a sport geared car, then the 6speed is the best. It will fit right up I am told. The gearing for the Vibe GT, Matrix xrs, and celica GT-s are identical. If you simply dont like the shifter, do a search, I think that some people were adding/ replacing shifter bushings. .

I changed out the bushings on my GT. It does make the shifting MUCH tighter, but it also removes a lot of the room for error.. I need to track down a short-shifter, I think, for the best performance out of it..

i have a base 5 speed with trd shifter and bushings and it is nice, i mean nice. try that out. oh and by the way, did you say the 6 speed will bolt right up to the 5 speed engine. that would be nice too.
