replace the engine

Post by Whalerz »

Hello all, I have just been informed by the Pontiac Dealership that my #1 rod bearing is spun and engine must be replaced. 2003, 49000 miles. Now I must wait to hear back if it will be covered under extended warranty. Not sure how they could possibly pin this on me. Normal driving, regular oil changes... Any how, I wondered if any of you out there have had this with your vibe???Any response would be greatly appreciated.

Unless they can prove you abused it, they can't deny it. As long as you have records of your oil changes from current to as far back as you can go and can prove it was maintained and not overdue for a change... they can't say NO. If they try, well fight them because as long as you have documents, there is no reason to deny.Sometimes they try and back out of those repairs and or try and put used parts on your car because of the price of the repair. Do not let them put in a used engine... A rebuilt with a warranty is better then some junker engine that could very well have been abused by the previous owner.

What dealership did you go? Superior? If you went there. Talk to Ron. He's usually very helpful. He'll hook you up. I went up there for my mom's Vibe all the when it was mine. I had many problems with mine. So yeah. Let me know if you want me to go up there as well. We can set em straight.EDIT: you don't happen to teach at Polk Elementary, do you? Inder

Ouch! That's some rotten luck, almost like a post I would have to make! By any chance, have you had any abnormal noises - ticking, knocking, or the like before the engine died? I'm convinced that my car ('03, base engine, 53,000 miles) has had some serious issues with the engine for about 15,000 miles now. On a cold day, when you fire up the engine and take off, it sounds like it is going to destroy itself. Now that summer is here, it still sounds pretty rough but not as bad as it does when it's cold out... Naturally, the dealer admits they do hear the noise but they refused to do anything about it. Who is your extended warranty through, by the way?

TRD4reel,I took it to Art Moran. No, I don't teach at Polk. I appreciate the offer to join me at the dealership and talk to Ron, but it is already torn down. I should know tomorrow what the "independant" finds and reports back to the warranty people.

ColonelPanic,I started hearing a knocking/ticking noise on Saturday, took it in on Monday. (coincidentally Monday was 3yrs to the day that I took delivery) The noise was quite prominent when accelerating, foot off the gas no noise. My extended warrenty is through Complete Care.Good luck with yours, you might want to try another dealer.

Well, the extended warranty will cover the engine replacement. It was determined to be a spun bearing/engine failure. But there is a catch. The warranty I purchased (through the dealership when I bought the car) is through a 3rd party/not GM. So they (warranty people) dictate the price they will pay and the parts that will be used. This is the part I am still trying to figure out. As explained to me by the service man... The warranty people do not want to purchase a GM engine. The dealership will not install anything other than the GM engine. So in order for the dealership to fix the vehicle I have to go with the GM engnie and pay the difference. Oh, I do have the option to take my car to another shop, at the expense of having the dealership put it all back together first. He also told me that the warranty people's engines are from junk yards, wrecked cars, test vehicles, etc. Now the more I think about this the more I question. Please correct me if I am wrong but I thought the Vibe had a Toyota engine. I will have a good read over of the extended warranty contract and pursue the issue of me picking up the differene further. One lesson learned so far is to be sure to NOT purchase a 3rd party extended warranty. I did not even realize at the time that what I got was not through GM. This is something I will address with the Dealership where I purchased the car. Not the end of this story yet. If anyone is interested I will keep you posted.

I would never buy a extended warranty that isn't backed by GM! That's just me though...

Keep us posted. Given the choice, I'd pay the difference on a crate motor if I planned on keeping the car for a long time. If I was going to trade it in shortly - let them shove anything under the hood that runs smooth.I put an insane amount of miles on my vehicle, so I tend to put the money I would have spent on the plan - and just use it for stuff that breaks out of warrenty. This yota motor better get me to my loan payoff date.

It really all depends... Honestly a dealership should not be allowed to install GM ONLY parts. They SHOULD put on what ever you want them to... They should not have the right to MAKE you buy and have installed, GM OEM parts. Fight them on that.About the extended warranty, I mentioned earlier that they may decide to not have GM parts installed (usually a decision based on the price of GM parts) and since they are authorizing a certain amount of $$$ to be towards the repair, regardless of where you take it... thats all thats going to be paid. And on that note, you will probably have to find out if and who might be allowed to perform that work for you as only certain shops are licensed to work with certain warranty companies. There may not be anyone. And keep in mind that what they are authorizing in repairs included diag. If you take your car somewhere else, you would probably have to pay the dealership the time they invested in your car as there is no coverage for a diagnosis. All that would fall on you.In all honesty, don't try and take it somewhere else, try and get the dealership to put in the parts they (warranty) wants to put in. As long as its not used parts... if it is uses parts... pay the difference and get it over with. Personally, and I said this before... stay away from used parts as much as possible.PM me if you have any more questions, I've been a service advisor for several years now and have heard most of the tricks extended warranty likes to pull. I'll agree. GMPP or any first party extended warranty is best. GMPP for example, stresses ONLY use of GM OEM parts.

How much did your extended warranty cost? Would be interesting to compare that to the cost of having a used engine installed. You could still be plenty of money ahead. A used engine from a wreck might be just fine, but whatevere they put in make sure it's warrantied. Seems like you ought to be able to get a new engine out of the warranty, but if it does turn out that the only free engine the warranty will give you is a used one, then it would probably still be ok for a long long time.Good luck, keep us posted
