quote:yeah, they really dont count as speakers, but gm says they are. What, exactly, about the tweeters makes them not count as speakers? Subwoofers are speakers. Woofers are speakers. Mid range drivers are speakers. Tweeters are speakers. Flat panel electrostatic drivers are speakers. Piezoelectric transducers with an appropriate sounding membrane are speakers. You can be assured that every ten speaker sound system in a Lexus counts at least four tweeters.

quote:Tell me what tweeters actually do and how they work as a speaker and then you got me.dictionary.com:quote:tweetern. [University of Waterloo] Syn. perf, chad (sense1). This term (like woofer) has been in use at Waterloo since1972 but is elsewhere unknown. In audio jargon, the word refers tothe treble speaker(s) on a hi-fi.quote:tweet·er ( P ) (twtr)n. quote:But what does a regular speaker do? I mean, there is different types of speakers for different frequencies? This could start a whole new thread.... There are many different types of speakers. Woofers (Subwoofers) produce the low frequencies (bass for example). Midrange do just that; midrange frequencies. Tweeters, high frequencies. There are also "all-purpose" speakers which try to give you the best of both worlds, but you will see in many home theater systems, all 3 types of speakers are built into one unit. You get much better sound when you have specialized speakers for each frequency range.baltimore17 also is accurate...quote:Subwoofers are speakers. Woofers are speakers. Just to give you some real jargon, the mid range drivers used to be called squawkers, like back in the '50s and early '60s. I just recalled that one from somewhere in the depth of wasted neurons.
