Yes, the title is somewhat on target. I did have an "incident" the other night, but not to the extent that my last thread titled similarly described (refer to Ragingfish's Vibe takes a hit!, November 2, 2003).Anyway, so I was driving home on the LOVELY NJ Turnpike from work Wednesday morning around 4:00 AM (ah, gotta love the restaurant business!). I'm doing a nice 82mph, no one on the road for miles in any direction. I'm in the far left lane. All of a sudden, I see something in the road up ahead. I go to switch lanes, but alas!, someone somewhere along the line came up beside me and was directly on my right. So, I couldn't move.I came closer to the object, realized it was a tire that had shredded up into a bunch of pieces (there seem to be a LOT of shredded tires on the turnpike. Must be a lot of Ford Exploders around! ). I realized I had no choice but to run the tire over. I did the best I could to adjust my position in the lane to minimize how much of the car ran over it. All of a sudden, I hit it. I heard a scraping, and realized it stuck in the wheel well. There was no hesitation in the car, so I knew it couldn't be so bad it was impeding the ability of the car to drive. Just as quickl;y as it happened, the noise was gone. The car drove fine. I drove for a few more miles, and something told me, I better get out and double check. I pulled across 3 lanes of traffic (jersey style baby! ) and went into the shoulder. Dug out a flashlight, and did some inspecting.A quick scan of the front fascia and side showed no problems. I felt a little better. I went to the wheel well. Hmm...something don't look right. Wait a minute...WHERE DID THE WHEEL WELL LINER GO???? I check towards the front of the well. I could see the washer fluid tank. The top: wires. The back, steel. Yep, that's right. The tire just flat ripped out the wheel well liner. Now, granted. The liner was broken ANYWAY. We all know I mentioned a while ago about replacing it because it would make a horrid grinding anytime I turned the wheel hard to the right backing out of a spot or hard to the left pulling into one...but I was just going to leave it as was for trade-in and take the hit. Guess now I'm buying a whole new liner. *sigh* Another $100 lost.

I hope you have better luck with your new ride (which I'm still thinkin' is gonna be a Solstice). That's freaky...and lucky... that all that happened was losing the well liner and not cutting lines or such.
I'm saying G6 coupe But yeah bet you knocked your liner loose on the bottom, it proably then hit the tire (the noise you heard) till it tore off. Please what ever your getting next... take care of it!

I say G6 Coupe too. Hate that the car got torn up again so close to trading it in though... At least it was minor, could have been much much worse I'm sure.

I've had the same exact problem with my psgr. side liner, so I picked up the only one my dealer had for something like ~$60 a LONG time ago, but I've yet to install it since it seems like a PITA to do, and refuse to pay them $100 to install it . I've been getting by with ziptying the remnants of the front part of the liner to the undercarriage tow points (I think they are?), but I'm going to need to install it soon..
your car must have a bulls eye on it, mike! glad you're ok and it's only minor damage. i do know those pesky wheel liners are kinda spendy. when i took mine into the ditch, they were about $80 each. but then again, i suppose that's pretty cheap fix, eh? lol

Quote »WHERE DID THE WHEEL WELL LINER GO????Oh golly gee raging, you didn't expect those zip ties that were holding it on to last forever, dontchaknow? Joatmon's on to something... It's cursed! So the way I see it, you've had good luck mechanically. My car, however is cursed mechanically. Let's do an engine/tranny swap at the Ohio meet. You bring plenty of zip ties, I'll bring the 10mm socket, duct tape and JB Weld. We'll let you trade in my cursed engine, so that way the car will be completely dead in another 30,000 miles and maybe I can be out there Vibin' for a while longer. lol!Seriously though, man that sucks.

OOOH I hate those dead tires. I have hit them before, they ripped the center of my air dam off on my last car ('92 Lumina Z34). Hang in there, the new Ragingmobile isn't too far away.

Damn! Glad it was not worse! Never done that before or had that happen but I ran over one of those orange barrel, large round black donuts that keep them from falling over in the wind in my Z24. Scared the crap out of me and I though oh boy I know I damaged the rocker panel. Luckily no damage... Anyway, glad your rocker panel is ok and it did not take out your washer bottle and or get it stuck in your brake system! Thanks to those fasteners that just let it go! The pic looks like a lift kit is on your Vibe!

Sorry to tell you this, but you run after it....Running at 82 is not very safe, and even worst at night. You cannot see what is in front of you, and when you can see it, it is already too late.By change you hit only some tire debrits... Imagine if you'd hit something much bigger, or even worst, a person.Sorry, but no pity for this
Glad the damage isn't too bad... all but reminds me of my "flying wheel" incident back in January. I have noticed quite a bit of debris on the highway over the past couple months. Possibly related to the excessive heat we've had lately causing some shredded tires.Quote, originally posted by Sub-Vibe-R »By change you hit only some tire debrits... When I had a Taurus. I had a tread come off my own vehicle. It wasd the drivers front side as I was going down a 2 lane hwy. the tread shot clear across the road and into a field and ended up doing about $2500 damage to the front of the car. Talk about scarey... I lucikly maitained perfect control and prompty plulled over.I did have some pics but cant seem to find them.

Too much traffic.
