I still run 98se.I have bought 2 computers that had XP on them, but I gave them away to family members who didn't have anything.I've been waiting for a new OS before I replace this one. I hate learning new stuff.

WHAT? how do you go from mac to windows?! thats like...going from a clean room to a garbage jk i guess i just love running osX with no antivirus or spyware problems if windows is used and customized properly it will get less but still gets some just sitting there. windows is just so wide spread you have to know it if you do anything in this world

Mac has...Well, I have always said that Windows is the reason I have a job. So I can't hate it.However, that should say something. I've had much more software trouble with Windows (and PC's in general) than I've ever had with a Mac. There are too many unskilled Windows developers writing buggy software that has caused Windows to behave poorly. Ever wonder why a fresh install of Windows runs perfectly and why everyone recommends reinstalling once a year? Not that it never happens with Macs, but Mac programming takes a certain amount more skill and therefore a more skilled programmer. The apps tend to be less buggy. As for the games, I'd scarcely say that's a solid reason to prefer one platform over anothe (I'm just not a gamer)r. I personally haven't played a PC game in years. My computer use is entirely professional work and Internet use. For me, my Macs are critical. Graphics work, web design, video work. All on Mac (OK, I do some video work on a PC). As for the Internet, my Mac suits me just fine. Now as for my full-time job, I do a lot of work in Windows. I'm currently a programmer and DB admin. The required platform for what I use is Windows. I have no choice.

I agree with jwalcik... there's only so many hours you can take the keyboard and mouse... a well designed console controller is like a leather seat with heat and massage... compared to a park bench keyboard.

3 pcs all running xp, but then again my wife, son and i are gamers, so a mac is not an option. Its to bad, mac has a better os and hardware, just bad software support (as far as games go). It will never amount to a gaming machine, which will always keep it at pitiful 2nd place in the world of pcs. As a retail manager of software, I had about 30 mac game titles and they took me about 5 years to sell. I still have one copy of myst for mac, if anyone wants it

I still have one copy of myst for mac, if anyone wants it gaming is actually one of the areas where the mac is likely to see a huge boost in support for after the transition to intel processors next year. there's some software called WINE that's been available for x86 based unixes for years that provides a library compatibility layer for running windows software on unix. generally, it gets used for people who want to run linux but also need to run some piece of windows software, like outlook. however, a company called transgaming, that supports WINE commercially for the purpose of playing windows games on linux, has already pledged to port their software to the intel version of Mac OS X. in a year or so you might be able to get the best of both worlds.
The days of pc and mac gaming are in the decline, with the ps3 and xbox 360 coming out it will only decline further. In just the last 5 years we have seen pc gaming slowly fade, I went from having 100+ shelves of pc games spined to fit them on, to about half that today. Yeah I know the boxes are smaller today. Even the list of games coming out are shrinking and the ps2 and xbox are still strong. It sucks I have always been a pc gamer, even in the old days of me making my own games on my trs-80 and apple 2e
Also the amount of good pc games has declined a ton. So doom 3 looked good but game play sucked, farcry was a good time, hl2 was amazing....and theres the other fps games bf2 etc. but nothing really stands out other than those...pc games are on the decline as it was said, the new consoles are where gaming is at specially since you can now put usb keyboard/mouse to ps2/xbox. but you still cant beat the old classic games on pc like scarcraft

Don't forget Battlefield 1942, I got hooked on that for an entire summer, just like Diablo 2, man that game was good. I believe that the fine line between Console gaming and PC gaming is going to get smaller and smaller until they merge, who knows the PS4 and the X-box 480 might have a windows or MAC OS and you can do all of the same things on there as you can do on the PC so thats my view.

Personally I would rather have a Mac for the stability and ease of using a computer and not worring so much about viri and such. The downfall is I love gaming, everyone here is going on about the next gen systems killing a computer. Well, I have Gamecube, Ps2, Xbox (Live also) and I never want to play them they all just collect dust in the long run. Just let me jump on my pc, go visit a few mesg boards, check my email, then turn the tunes on and play some Blizzard games. But then I can play the old school games with roms on here and make myself happier. I'm just tired of everything being so 3D and having to have the best graphics, I haven't played a great game on the consoles except the remakes of classic games on GBA... So I'm not one for the new gen systems. So I'm going to stick with good ol Windows.
I use windoze xp at work...when the servers are not down, and Mac's at home. I currently have 3 macs running flawlessly. I plan on putting virtual pc on my g4 iMac to expand the gaming for my kiddos. I also plan on resurrecting my old pc for them to bang on and then maybe buying a new iMac or iBook when they start shipping with the intel chips. That way virtual pc will work even better. All of our business apps work great on our macs. In fact my G4 came preloaded with word, excel and i.e.Like I always say. "My mac can do everything your p.c. can do...except crash" As far as windows longhorn, or whatever it will be called, goes I'll be anxious to see how it comes out. So far they seem to have cut more features than they have been able to make function properly. Several articles I have read seem to suggest that unless they turn things around pc consumers will find the changes are not significant enough to upgrade.

Like I said virtual pc allows you to play ANY windows based software. I had 3 pc's before switching to mac. That was enough for me to see I needed a MUCH more stable platform. I asked one of or i.t. guys what he thought and he told me the reason why a lot of companies stay with p.c.'s is because the i.t. departments would end up being down sized. He explained it this way, Mac operating systems are so much more stable they require far less maintenance. Hence less tech's needed to service them. That plus the dramaticaly more secure nature of macs means less worry about viruses and security breaches. All this makes it job suicide for i.t. guys to reccomend a switch. The county I work for uses Dell p.c.'s and servers in every area except for a very important part of the crime lab. The failure rate of the dell's is about 1 out of three. The servers go down A LOT (which is fun). The Mac systems in the lab NEVER have any issues. They sent my buddy to a VERY expensive mac certification course 3 years ago and he has never had to touch the lab computers. He sure does use that microbust certification on a daily basis.

well nobody doubts that mac are better hardware and software, but the reason that most stay with pc's is that they have 97% of the world market share. Its sad that the best didnt win the race.
Apple did it to themselves though. That no open source thing is a bi***!

Quote, originally posted by desert_dweller »Apples problem was the bundling of Hardware and OS together and keeping the whole thing proprietary. That's kinda like what happened to Sony's Betamax VCRs, much better than VHS, but it was proprietary so a bunch of other companies got together and came out with competitively priced and interoperable VHS VCRs, which caused betamax to be ignored to death. The last apple I ran a program on was a brand new IIe.
The other problem with apple is the cost to get a license to write software for them. Two years ago a guy in my neighborhood who writes software for pc's told me the license cost for him would be $10000.00!!!!! Ridiculous!!!!!!

Thats great, I just realized that those Macs fueled my childhood by giving me wonderous games like the oregon trial. But still my first PC had virtual pinball and Tyran, those were the days. Also with the buzz about Windows crashing? I've never had my system crash or think about crashing. The only computer with windows on it that I've seen that crashes constantly is my parents Dell, which is probably the reason.

This Toshiba I'm sitting in front of right now isn't doing so hot either... I can't even make the HP software for the All-in-One printer install because Windows keeps coming up with odd errors...and this is XP even.
Quote, originally posted by desert_dweller »Probably operator error. What "odd" errors are you getting?Well there isn't really much room for operator error when all one has to do is click "next" and the thing just refuses to continue after a few minutes of supposedly installing something and won't tell me why, other than to tell me to unplug the USB device and restart the computer and try to reinstall, which I've done four times to no avail. The one time it acted like it finished, it left absolutely nothing in relation to this printer on the machine at all, only the old folders and programs for the previous HP printers we've had. (And yes I did look in the Program Files folder and did a search for any related files.) You're supposed to be able to put a picture in the scanner and hit "scan" and it will bring up the software, but it claims no software is installed when you do that, and there is no software to be found anywhere on the machine to run it first and then scan that way.If you can figure it out or offer suggestions, go for it, because nothing I've tried works, and I'm definitely not a novice at this.
I have to chime in with the windows... at home I'm running 2 desktops on XP, a laptop on XP, and a desktop on server 2003. great stuff...and you can't beat the prices if you know how to get it... take some classes.. everthing is dirt cheap then. WinXP $8. Office 2003 $10. Visual Studio .NET $15. Server 2003 Enterprise Free for learning purposes.Plus i've rarely had issues other than ones that I cause, such as installing freeware stuff to try out and finding that it messes with too many things, or doing things for the sole purpose of seeing if i can...I'm also a Linux/UNIX fan, OS X isn't too bad, but i really don't like MAC OS9....I do find some of the arguements here funny though...heard and gave the reasons many times but here goes...Macs are for more superior because they are more stable and secure.funny because you don't have many people other than apple people writing the programs you run on them, and the hardware and OS are designed to work togeather, so you get no leway with that.If Microsoft restricted what hardware could run what version of windows and who could make that hardware and who could write the programs, it would be just as stable. I'm running an XP laptop that was designed for 98 without any issues.Mac hasn't had as many of it's security issues found since not many people are looking at it as a target since Microsoft is such a bigger target. If Mac gets to be the marketshare that's targeted, it will find all kinds of issues. The only way to truely secure the computer is to unplug it, then put it into a maximum security vault that noone can access. that's true of anything. As a network administrator, I'm not nearly as worried about company information being stolen by hackers as by employees putting it on thumbdrives and losing them. My stuff is patched up and it's visibility is very limited to the outside world. can you break into it if you know what your're doing? it may take a while but yes. can you break into 99% of servers/computers if you know what you're doing? without a doubt. If we did go to macs (which we have no intention of), i wouldn't be worried about losing staff, i would be worried about the number of qualified people that I could hire if i needed them.In my experiance, people who know the system they work on well will do just as good as the next guy on the system that he/she knows just as well be it windows, mac, unix, linux, solaris etc...to each his own and for whatever task they are doing at the time. each OS is better at something.
