Curb Rash Blues..

Post by McVibe »

So I live in town and have to park next to a curb... My mom was driving my Vibe because her Neon blew a head gasket. So shes pulling into the house and I hear the scrape from inside the house Needless to say I love my mom VERY MUCH But she offered to have them repaired. What do you think needs to be done, the rim is just scraped to hell, not bent, so I was thinking of sanding it down with a dremel and giving it a new powder coat. Think that'll work? BTW she was also the person who damaged my Vibe first when she backed up into a car at McDonalds... Thats long been fixed though...Edit: Here are some pics

I love my mom too, but she'd be buying me a new wheel if she did that much damage...

Yeah, It looks a little beyond repair. I would have my mom pay for it or at least help pay for it. It's the old "you break it, you buy it" rule.

Sorry to see that. I'll bet that while you were growing up you ruined lots of her good stuff, too. Sons grow up. That's when Moms get even.

Well, i talked to a guy who owns a body shop here and he took a look at them and he said he can make them look better but not brand new. I dont know weither or not to just get a replacement rim or make it look "better"

Send her to her room and take away her keys. Tell her she's grounded from the car until further notice. Then make her do chores around the house and save her allowance until she can pay for a new one. Oh, wait... I guess that doesn't work the same in reverse. I'm sure she'd probably be willing to pay for a new one, but as her loving and grateful son, you should just give her a big hug and tell her not to worry about it. (...and then secretly take away her keys!)

Enough! He said she offered to have them fixed, not that he was going to make her do it.Let's stick to discussing how it can be fixed and cease the pointless bickering.

Wow, instant flame war. Thanks for the reality check, moderator! The rim looks like it's just regular aluminum - a shop could make it smooth and attempt to match the rest - but it'll never be perfect. I've seen some pretty good rim repairs - but you can always tell up close. If you really don't want to buy a rim - consider the cost you'll spend on the repair and subtract that from the cost of a new rim. Is that additional cost worth a new rim?And buy your mom some flowers... she already feels bad :-)I'd pay for the damage. I put my mom through hell when I was a teen... I jump at the chance to make up for it now Not for guilt, but for respect.

When you have kids its YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to care for them, not your JOB. If you are lucky enough to get their love back then thats more than enough and have handled the responsibility well, if you take care of them all their lives, then wreck their car that they bought and paid for, you think they should be like "oh well ****, im old and a moron, but remember i raised you, you owe me, and im calling in a favor here"yeah thats a good ideasome people need to just go home

well if you HAVE to have your vibe in perfect condition then get a new one, otherwise just get it fixed, a car is a machine and its gonna get dents and nicks etc. althou some are uglier than others...... i bet the fix wont look so bad you might...MIGHT not see if if you didnt know about it, but you'll be driving most the time and wont see it . I broke my dads side mirror off the van last year...totally paid for it but if my parents broke my car i think they would foot the bill, i wouldnt ask them too they would prolly offer. if your mom wants to pay part let her, just dont maker her..now if it was a sister....than you have to make them pay!!!!

all i can say is (prepare yourself this is harsh) seeing that rim makes me feel not so bad about f'ing mine up! i dont see that being very fixable, but really how big a deal is it? rims can possibley stay perfect forever anyway, id just try to buff it up a bit and let it ride.

REPLACE THE RIMOK, back on the subject of the rim. I would replace it because there is a lot of material damage and you could get a speed wobble on the highway and get uneven tire wear. Check E-bay. Anything you do cosmetically will never match factory "look and feel." Check your local yards, which in itself is a heck of a lot of fun. As for who should pay, I always pay for my mistakes, but my mother has earned too much respect so I would wink and say "don't worry about it" Each family is different. However, her Vibe privileges would be absolutely revoked.A

I have now curbed my front and rear passenger Rims, and it sucks I know. Its a matter of cost what is cheaper...replace, fix, or leave it alone. Me I'm waiting till winter slap on my factory tires and then take the rims in to get repaired.

Just get a used rim there are plenty out there... You may even spend more fixing your current than a used. Either way the tire will have to come off to fix it right or if you get a used rim, so that cost is a given. Just get a used one and you are done!

Yes; get a replacement rim, but doesn't have to be new. And check eBay, there's loads out there.I know that my mom gets offended if she offers to help and I refuse. I've actually had arguments with her about accepting money. Then my wife pointed out that maybe my mom just wants to be able to help while she's around to enjoy it.So, that said, if you mom wants to help you get a new rim, let her. You don't have to charge her the full amount. Get creative: ask for her to make one of your favorite home-cooked meals (or go out to dinner, if she's not adept in the kitchen); go to a ball game...anything, but spend some quality time with your mom and let her feel like she helped out. Years from now, you'll remember this fondly instead of begrudgingly.
