Today I drove around with my "out of gas" indicator light on for a long time. I wimped out and got a fill up. But it got me thinking about how far I could go before I ran out of gas. Has anyone tested this experimentally? That is, has anyone actually run out of gas? And if so, how many miles did you go between when the idiot light came on and when you coasted to a sputtering stop? This is valuable info.

I saw that "yellow light" once driving home from a long trip. I went about another 30 miles and chickened out with about 20 miles yet to go, pulling off the interstate late at night to fill up. Took a little less than 11 gal. I would have had plenty of gas to get home but I didn't want to jeopardize my 44 years of driving without ever running out of gas [or even pretending that I did. ]

I have traveled more than 75 miles with that light on....That tank yeilded 475 miles. from Madison, WIto Columbia, MOI was getting very afraid I would run out but made it to the station at my exit and filled up right away..
First time mine came on I nearly paniced. Though it was only three months after I got the car, and I was driving from Jersey to GA the day after Irene blew through..so most of Virginia didn't have power (or working gas pumps!)But lately since i've been broke, I let it run down. I don't think i've broken a 12 gallon fill yet, and according to the manual, there's a 13 gallon tank. I've gotten BELOW the E and still had room to spare. Not that going that low doesn't make me nervous...

That light is commonplace in my Vibe but I havn't run out yet. My brother ran out in his sunfire and the gauge still said that he had 1/8 of a tank left.

i ran the dealerships paid tank of gas until the light came on and it was like half way on the last little red bar. when i filled it up i think i put like a low 10 gallons of gas in, PLENTY of driving left so say 50 miles left if you drive crazy without being scared. Next time im letting it get even lower unless gas is super cheap.
reading this thread reminded me ** runs out and gets fuel receipt to enter into spreedsheet **out of 33 years driving I've only run out of gas once and funny enough it was at a gas station (USAF). I was letting the engine run to keep warm and when they opened up I put it into gear and the engine died. I turned it over and looked at the guage .. well below E, had to push it to the pump. very embarrassing

I just put a wee bit over 12 gallons in the tank yesterday, setting an all time record for the least amount of fuel remaining in my car. The low fuel light came on around the 270 mark, and the tank was filled at around 310 miles. That gave around 25.8 MPG or so. Not the greatest, but considering I've frequently been seeing numbers under 20 and even as low as 16 in recent times, almost 26 is a hell of an improvement. I won't be running it that low again anytime soon. Spending $25-30 at the pump in one lump sum takes its toll on the ol' wallet... I'll be filling it up more often as to gradually throw my money out the window.

That is a common problem with sunfires and cavaliers. Mine also ran out of gas before the light came on. We had it fixed under warranty. My brother just bought a cavalier and I warned him about this so he asked and was told by the dealer that GM has fixed the problem on all new Sunfires and Cavaliers.

The first time my light came on, I went about ten more miles and filled it up. I filed it with as much as would go in and ended up being able to put about 2 or 3 tenths of a gallon more than the tank supposedly holds. I don't know about you, but that tells me I must have been running on fumes. I, for one, won't take chances when that light comes on.
I ran her down last night. I got over 400 miles on the tank for only the second time (although I usually don't run her down this far.) I didn't get the exact mileage of when my light went on, but based on how far I had left to go to work and how far it was home, I went about 45 miles with the light on...give or take. Not too bad for a GT with the AC on all 412 miles . After I will fill up today and post how much gas she took when I get home tonight.Jim

I ran out of gas...at the pump (sort of)...too once. I knew I needed to get gas so I pulled into a station on my way to work one morning. Before I could get out of the car, I noticed these two guys standing there looking at me sort of funny. I don't typically worry about that kind of stuff, but something about this just made me nervous, so I decided to go somewhere else. I left the gas station--got about 2 blocks away--and ran out of gas. Had to call my best friend and get her out of bed to bring me some gas. When she found out I HAD been sitting by a pump and left, I got a LOT of crap! In the Vibe I've had the light come on a couple times, but I too have chickened out and just filled it up.
The evil yellow light came on yesterday... I drove to work and back (about 30 miles round trip), then filled up the tank and it only took 11.42 gallons (without topping off). It seems that the light is a very "early" warning, but I don't want to take any chances. I've hear that running out of gas can burn up the fuel pump/injectors... I don't know the technicals about it, but that's just what I've heard.
I've put in 12.6 or so before.I've ran my other cars out of gas before. Lets see her, going around a corner and having it stall, pulling into a gas station and having it stall, and having it coast and stop about 500 feet from a gas staion. Oh yeah, also parking on a hill and not being able to restart it until I turn it th eother direction.
i almost ran out of gas last friday the light came on on wed and i kept stretching it on the way back from lunch it started to cut out a lil so i parked it asap and then when work was over i promply drove to the closest service station. it would cut out if you cornered sharply or went up a hill

Never done this and never accidentally ran out of gas but it is not a good thing to do. The fuel pump uses gas to cool it down and if run out, the pump can burn up. Plus it can suck up all the crap close to the bottom of the tank. Camaros and Firebirds used to do it lots. When I worked at GM Roadside Assistance, I would get calls for Camaros and F-bird owners, "I ran out of gas". I would send gas out to them only to get a call, "my car will not start now and I got gas". Inevitably I was calling a tow truck and they were paying for a new fuel pump! GM would not cover it...
i ran out of gas one time. that was back when i was young, dumb and full of.... well, you know.that is what the gas guage is for, so you know how much gas you have, and don't run out!
