Grand Theft Auto.... and then some!

Post by BlueCrush »

Last update: July 8, 2005 at 8:55 PMGrand Theft Auto, and then some ... Ron Harris, Associated Press July 9, 2005 VIDEO0709 SAN FRANCISCO -- Graphic sexual content that appears in a popular video game is giving family advocates a new reason to be offended. In the (removed)-and-violence-themed game "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas,'' the main character tries to avenge the murder of his mother in the gang-ridden streets of his hometown — and picks up women along the way.But a modification that can be downloaded from the Internet allows the player to see the female characters naked, and shows a male and female character engaged in various graphic sexual positions. It wasn't clear whether the content originated with the game or with the modification. The game's publisher, Rockstar Games, wouldn't say.The Minneapolis-based National Institute on the Media and the Family issued a parental alert Friday denouncing the game and its creator."While San Andreas is already full of violent behavior and sexual themes, the pornographic (removed) scenes push it over the edge,'' said David Walsh, the group's founder. The mod's author — Patrick Wildenborg of Deventer, Netherlands — told The Associated Press Friday that his code merely unlocks content that is already included in the game as it is sold."If Rockstar Games denies that, then they're lying and I will be able to prove that,'' Wildenborg, 36, wrote in an e-mail. "My mod does not introduce anything to the game. All the content that is shown was already present on the DVD.''Walsh said the "hot coffee'' scenes are pornography by anyone's definition, and called on Rockstar to "come clean'' on whether they programmed the scenes into the game."This is about kids,'' Walsh said. "Can you imagine the impact of 13, 14 and 15 year old boys literally enacting this scene?''On Friday, Rockstar Games confirmed that the Entertainment Software Ratings Board was investigating the alleged (removed) hack. But when asked directly whether Rockstar was responsible for the illicit content, spokesman Rodney Walker refused to answer."We also feel confident that the investigation will uphold the original rating of the game, as the work of the mod community is beyond the scope of either publishers or the ESRB,'' the company statement said.Game designers have long tucked hidden elements in their work, some meant to be found, others not. Several magazines post codes that can be entered during game play that allow the player to jump to various levels, give them unlimited ammunition, or go into "God mode'' and become invincible.——— Associated Press Writer Emily Johns in Minneapolis contributed to this report.———

Um... yeah imagine the impact that will have on 13-14 year olds who are probably already having (removed) and should "legally" not be playing that game in the first place. HELLO PARENTS? ANYONE HOME?Great game by the way, loved it. Best one Rockstar made yet. And I have the PS2 version, not the newly released PC version so I don't get those mod scenes.

ah yeah that was a fun mission. Now you can get to Los Venturos which is an awsome Las Vegas like city. Lots of good cars to steal parked along the strip and a vegas "kinky" style casino worker for a girl to date. She likes a rich muscular guy and enjoys dancing and expensive food. You can also gamble huge here to like 100,000 and stuff.

ppl are so worried about GTA when there are many other full nude games out there like "Singles, Flirt up your life" a mature sims style game as well as "God Of War" and obviously "Playboy the Mansion" and many other games out there. Why people even have nude skins on their "Unreal Tournement" characters, some actually played by playmates... and other online games that came with a M label. Oh well I got my GTA.

I guess its a big deal because the code is on the retail disk..ok fine, but i think game developers need to make adult rated games. not being just sexual but the violence and such, like gow. its the retailers that need to watch who they sell it to. Then they could sell 2 versions a M rated and A rated, i think some games have already done that but i cant remember which...maybe kingpin for pc. Theres a big market for adult games (again not just the sexual part) so i think there not bad as long as they are sold to adults only.

This is the problem I see with the American culture. Violence is all over tv shows and the news, but (removed) is a forbidden. In my opinion, the people that are mature enough for the acts of violence and theft in this game they are mature enough for the (removed) parts, that are hidden and have to be unlocked.Parents can complain all they want but it's there responsibility to know what is loaded on the computer. If they don't want them to load it, ban those sites with the downloads using parental controls.

Well IMO if you don't want your kid playing mini (removed) games... why let them shot up gangsters in drive by shootings, pick up a ho with your pimped out ride and anything else you can do in GTA? Parents should stop worrying about the "unlockable" content and instead not let their kids play the game period.

I agree with all of you guys - northvibe, sloth, and Mavrik. The culture is stupid. There's the same thing with movies - theaters won't show an NC-17 (formerly X), but nip and tuck the scenes a bit and you have R. Which people of all ages will see. Parents won't stop their kids from seeing R films, but they're all over theaters showing NC-17.There's definitely an audience for adult games, but it's small and difficult to sell the games since most retails ships won't sell them. Afraid the religous right is gonna come down on them. (As you noted, they're happy to start wars, kill people, but (removed)! Oh my G**!)It's all caused by the same thing: a minority with an agenda (& lawyers). This is why GTA can sell like hotcakes until it gets Adult Only rating. Japan, on the other hand, probably spends as much on porn as we do defense

GTA is already stamped with a huge "M" (not suitable for under 17) so that should give a hint to parents about it's content. This is just another example of irresponsible parents trying to pass parenthood onto politicians. Stores will temporarily pull them off the shelves, everyone will be giggling about it in the hallways, then in a couple months we'll all be like "GTA what??"Anyone remember the Mortal Kombat controversy and the Leisure Suit Larry games ? Think of it as media evolution...old people had National Geographic and pregnancy books when they were kids, nowadays kids have "M" video games.

I have to add that I'm glad games are becoming more mature. That way I can continue enjoying them and not be considered "childish" for playing games.I still find myself firing up Mario Bros 3, Castlevania 2, and Zelda every once in awhile though.

I remember the days of the Mortal Kombat uproar as well which has gone into the past without much incident seeing as how the new ones are worse then the old ones and no one says a word. I'm glad to that games are getting more mature as well though I also play Zelda, Donkey Kong Country, Sonic and other older games that seem childish and below graphic standards of today lol. I'm more of Blood Rayne and RPG style games like Guild Wars but every now and then I like to blow stuff up to "Welcome to the Jungle"
