Paint on bedliner

Post by binary »

I saw a commercial on TV for a paint your own bedliner for trucks. It got me thinking - I wonder if it would work on the plastic in the cargo areas?Just thinking out loud...

Talk to Satur9... he has Rhino-lining on the cargo area of his Vibe. Saw it at the MI Super Meet, looks pretty good.

i thought the exact same thing the first time i saw the cargo area of a vibe. however, i'd strongly caution against any of the brands you paint on yourself (herculiner is the only one that comes immediately to mind, but there are others). in the truck world, they're notorious for cracking, peeling, and being difficult to touch up. i do know that herculiner is somewhat popular with older jeep wrangler/ford bronco owners as a interior/flooring material with mixed results, but as an actual cargo surface, it's durability is questionable. for a bit more (well, to be honest 2-3x as much) you can get rhino liner or line-x sprayed on. they're *much* higher quality products that will in all likelihood last longer than most of the rest of your car. i'm not sure exactly how much surface area there is back there, or how much they'd charge for the masking/removal of parts, but just as a reference, a 6' truck bed can be covered in herculiner for about $150 + your time to prep and install (easily 12 hours). the same truck bed can be professionally sprayed in about 6 hours for about $350.

Thanks - I was also reading about the poor experiences with DIY bed liners, seems like we're all agreed - leave em on the shelf.I wonder if just yanking the interior pieces and taking them to the pro to spray would work? I sure as hell wouldn't want to tape and paper my interior!I need to find some photos of Satur9's cargo area then!

DIY linners are also very very thin. where as the Rhino stuff is usually 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick. I had Rhino in my S-10's bed. Awesome stuff...also light weight items will still slide on Rhino the heavier item wont budge..

I sure as hell wouldn't want to tape and paper my interior!well, they'd do the masking there. keep in mind that they do some pretty intricate work. i've been in line-x shops where the entire shop, down to the wastebaskets and pencil holders, were covered in the stuff. they've been known to do fine detail work to get corporate logos or the like in the bed of trucks as well.how much are you thinking about having done? the minimum coverage that seems practical would be the floor piece (over the spare, easily removable), and the backs of the seats. i'm not sure how the seat backs come off, but i can't imagine its too difficult to remove them. other than that, the only parts i can think of that you might want covered would be the sides of the rear compartment, and i'm not familiar enough with where the seams in the plastic are to be able to even venture a guess as to what's involved in removing those.as long as you're clear with the installer about what you want masked (any screw holes for reinstallation, the cargo tie-down tracks, edges that need to move against another piece, etc). it wouldn't hurt to make a trip to an installer and ask. for truck beds, they can give you an estimate sight unseen, but for something like this they might have to spend a few minutes poking around.
