Dim stereo display problem

Post by kiribeth »

I'm having problems with a dim display on my stock 1CD player. In daylight it is hardly visible and only in the center of the display. So I can see the last digit of the time, with the first digit of the time much dimmer, and the hour is not visible without shading the player with my hand. At night the clock/display is visible, but is bright in the center and noticibly more dim at the edges. I don't have any problems with the dash cluster, just the stereo display.Does anyone know what's up with my display or how to fix it?I can send pics tomorrow if you need them.Thanks.

Sounds like the display on the stereo is screwed up...your best bet will probably be to have the head unit replaced if it's still under warranty, or find somebody on here who is selling one that you could replace it with. It's pretty easy to get in and out. Not sure what would cause something like that other than extreme cold, which affects my whole display though, not just part of it...

Yep, what she said. My display kinda stinks too, it's almost impossible to read (this current single disc stock unit is a refurb and the display isn't very bright plus the inside of the screen is cloudy.)Not a lot you could do short from replacing the thing.

Thanks. That's pretty much what I expected. Looks like I should be able to pick up a replacement without too much trouble and/or expense. Just another thing to get done eventually!

There's a few floating around that you can grab cheap or free from fellow gvc'ers that have upgraded their systems. Check in the "Pay It Forward" thread, perhaps someone still has one.

I JUST started having this problem, and I have a friend who ows a pontiac Grand Am with the same Stereo, and the same problem. If it's under warranty I want to take it in and get a new (or rebuild even) one. If not.... then I am thinking of just getting a new aftermarket head unit. And intight would be GREAT. Thanks all....

Don't know if it's common, but it should be covered under the basic warranty.I replaced a couple of buttons on my HU and knocked a lamp loose in the process...caused the same dim display that was mentioned at the top of this post. Pulled the HU, fixed the lamp..good as new.If you're not comfortable pulling the HU, take it in. Although it sounds like you're looking to go aftermarket anyway.

Thanks, and you are right, I am leaning twards an aftermarket one. I am a little tight for money however since my fiance just got an 05 Lancer and most of our money is wrapped up in that right now. But I will be taking it up to the dealership soon.
