Driving in Snow

Hello all. Just wanted to let everyone know I bought my vibe the day before yesterday. A 2004 Silver one (Will post pics when I take them). It is a 2004 with 27,000 miles on it. Picked it up for $12,499 (Hope I got a good deal....lol). I figured being it has a Toyota motor in it, 27,000 miles is low mileage....anyway.....The reason I am making this post it, to ask about how these handle in the snow. I live in Pennsylvania (Pocono Mountains) and the snow can get kinda rough here. Has anyone had to drive theirs through a bad storm yet, and, if so, how does it handle the road conditions?Thanks in AdvanceGary

Hi Gary!Welcome to genvibe First of all get yourself a good set of winter tires. I have handled a couple of Montreal winters and have had no problems what so ever. My tires are Kumho KW 11s.Post those pics when you get a chance!

I suggest buying a good set of snow tires. With a good set, these drive better in snow than any other 2 wheel drive I've driven.If you have the 17" wheels that have the performance tires on them you'll definately need to change the tires for winter. Just about suicide otherwise.

Wow....thanks for the quick replies guys. I am going to post my pics tonight. So , does everyone think I got a good deal on it ? I dont know much about cars, but, I really felt I got a pretty decent deal.Please let me know what you think.Gary

I try to not price shop after I've already spent the money. Doesn't help if I find a better price than I paid, and if it's a good price it's still a lot of money. That is an awesome deal....Cheapest I've seen is around 14K for base and like no options.

Thanks....not really sure what I have planned. I did have a disappointment yesterday though.Since I picked up ther car, I was not too happy with the sound system. Please dont misunderstand me, I am not looking for a Kick A** sound system that is going to bend the windows, but, the stereo was not getting too much treble (It was sounding clear, but, not clear enough for my liking). So, I went to Circuit City to get 2 front speakers installed. I figured if I got better front speakers, it would come through with more treble. Well, after the speaker installation, it did have more treble, but, it still wasnt what I was looking for.I am thinking I should just get a new CD player for it. No matter what web-site I go to (Circuit City, Best Buy..etc) and search for a CD player, the site tells me it will not fit in my Vibe...I find that very bizzarre. Does anyone else have this problem with the stereo not giving out too much treble? The bass and the power of the stereo is fine. The only gripe I have is with the high end.Gary

i had the same problemreally its hard to hear door speakers when your doing 80+mph windows downso i got some 2inch tweeters from some website, i forget which...and mounted them on the little triangle plastic piece on the inside of the door behind the mirrors...made a world of difference...im finding myself turning the trebble down sometimesbut thats something to look into

Question about that......By any chance, do you have a pic exactly where you mounted them ? Because I dont see a spot on the door where I would be able to put those. I have heard people mention that.I am even willing to pay Best Buy or Circuit City to install them. I am just afraid to take my door panel off and cut a hole (if need be). Is that only with moon and tune package? Or did some people actually cut a circle out of their door panel? And, would best buy or circuit city do a job like that for someone ?Please advise.Gary

Welcome!!As everyone else said, you should probably get snow tires, my Vibe doesn't go too bad in the snow but out here near Pittsburgh, we don't get nearly as much snow as you guys out in the Poconos. But yeah, I would recommend some good snow tires. The one drawback I have seen to the Vibe in snow would be the wide tire vs. the weight of the car.

Speaking of satellite, The CD Deck in my vibe kinda seems like a satellite radio. Dont misunderstand what I am saying, I know it is not a satellite radio, but, when I tune to a station, it gives me the artists name, the name of the song, the radio station name...etc. Are these radio's satellite ready? And, if they are, what do I need to do to get satellite radio broadcasted to mine ?Thanks again everyone.Gary

No, that is a thing that started a few years back, it is an embedded signal in the radio transmission that relays that info to compatable radios.

I was impressed with my Vibe's handling in the snow. My first Non-4x4 in 15 years. The stock Conti's (I Know ...I know ...many folks hate em) on the 16" rims work fine here in Chicagoland. Being a Base Vibe it's hard to over power the tires and traction doesn't suffer too much. Deepest snow this winter was about 8"-10" , never got stuck and never got too squirrely, the ABS helps too. Regardless of what tires you prefer, common sense, i.e. reduce speed at bit, leave a little etxra room between other cars etc. is what matters when dealing with the white stuff. Enjoy Your New Ride!
