Yes, you are supposed to change it. I never changed mine, and last week (at 135,000 km/84000 mi) I just replaced the entire rear differential due to bearing failure.http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=17080

Wow 80,000+ miles - the manual says every 24,000km / 15,000 miles (mines CDN) - I've only recently got my '06 AWD but I plan on doing it often being it's only for the cost of oil for me,,******Also take note you should be changing your tranfer case also - it takes the same type gear oil as the diff. The transfer case takes .75L and your rear diff is .5L so with a couple 1L bottles you have more than enough - I would also recommend changing it to Synthetic Oil for the small amount being used and the frequency of change why not have the best darn gear oil you can get,,,I've found BMW Motorcycle shops carry 80/90W Synthetic Gear oil for the shaft drive bikes and it's relatively cheap,,Lastly - if you buy the 1L bottles rather than a 4L jug it has a tappered filling neck that you cut open and if you are careful where you cut it and get 10" of clear tubing to fit in the diameter of the top Holes on the Diff and Tranfer case all you need to do is squeeze the bottle as it sits on the garage floor and the tube is inserted in the box being filled - pretty simple and clean process,, when it drips it's full,,Cheers,,B '06AWD
