Any problems with dealer installed alarms?

Post by RoundUp »

Hi, I am getting my Vibe soon, but the dealer can't find one with the factory security system. So, I was wondering if there has been any problems with aftermarket alarms. I called GM and they said that they would not fix problems caused by aftermarket products. So, if I get an alarm installed and there is a fire and it gets linked back to the alarm system, then there goes my car. They said my best bet is to get the dealer to install it and have them put it into writing that they will fix any problems that are associated with the alarm installation. Should I be concerned? Any comments would be appreciated.

RoundUp,I work at a dealership and we install many aftermarket alarms systems for our customers. I haven't heard of any problems associated with them , but that doesn't mean that something couldn't go wrong. I think it's safe to say that an aftermarket alarm is safe. If it wasn't they wouldn't sell them at every electronics store across the nation. If the dealership that you are dealing with is willing to give you a statement in writing that they will fix any problems assaciated with the aftermarket then definately do that. Make sure you kepp that piece of paper in a safe place in case anything happens. To answer your question, I would have to say that you don't have anything to worry about with the aftermarket alarms system. Ultimately that 's up to you though.Shadow Realm

I will say this if you are going aftermarket, SPEND MONEY!!!! get the best one that you can possibly afford. I put a cheaper alarm on my old vibe last year and I think it brought me here:http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=3384

Thanks for your reassurance Shadow. Yank, that is a mighty scary thing to happen. The dealer was pretty vague about the alarm. All I know is that including installation, it will cost almost as much as the factory alarm. They said there's a 3-year or 60,000 km warranty on it. I told them to install it because I didn't have much time to look around. Hopefully it won't drain the battery too much.

The dealership we bought our vibe at installed an alarm in all their pre-owned cars apparently. They told us they'd take it out if we didn't want to buy the alarm, but when we started complaining about the trade-in value of our Jeep, and how much we were going to offer, they decided to throw in the alarm. Had the car for almost a month now, we'll see if it works. The only things I don't like is that it's not hooked up to the rear hatch like the factory keyless entry, and it doesn't have remote start like the viper alarm my friend has in his Camry. *shrugs* oh well. Next time the local police offer free window etching, I'll get that done for sh!/s & giggles too.
