Judging by the damage both were serious accidents. However, look closer and you will notice little or no damage from the firewall back except for smashed windshield on the passenger side (very common when a passenger side air-bag goes off). Unless the occupants weren't wearing seatbelts, I doubt there were any serious injuries in either accident.

I was surprised to not see any other crumpling or bending of the frame from the firewall back. Even though crumpling can be good to protect the occupants, it looks like both vehicles held up very well given the severity. This only further confirms the high crash test ratings given to the Vibe/Matrix.

The Vibe/Matrix both get high front collision survival scores because all the damage you see served to absorb the force of the crash. The car doesn't survive, but the occupants do. I guess if it was my choice that is the way I'd want it, too!KSNeptune

Just got a mailing from GM Canada stating the Vibe got a 5 star safety rating for Frontal Impact, Driver and Passenger (FWD) and Side Impact, Driver's Side (AWD) by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Admin (NHTSA) for 2003.

No doubt Salsa. Makes me feel really good that I am driving a safe car. I too hope that everyone was ok after these accidents. I pray that none of us ever have to see our Matrix/Vibe in that condition.

Biohazard=someone probably didn't use their seatbelt. Always buckle up--there is the proof!I agree with the others here, given the amount of frontal damage and the appearant lack of damage behind the firewall means this is a rather safe design.$25,000 damage means it is totaled. Will likely be sold to a junkyard/parts source outlet and stripped of all usable parts. Good news for those who are on waiting lists for parts?

I noticed that in the pic of the second Vibe that there is a booster pack attached to the battery of the Vibe. Wonder if that means the Vibe is still driveable?

Ahhh.... I did not know that. I thought the 17" were standard on the GT. My bad.

Sweet! You got them and you didn't even know they were the upgraded wheels. That also means you have ABS (required with the 17" wheels and tires).

I thought that ABS was standard on all GT's. I could be wrong. I know that 4 wheel discs are standard on the GT.

The second was a vibe, the rest are matrix.Believe it or not, the first two are very similar to what my sunfire looked like...and the only intrusion into the cabin was the airbags and the windshield was annihilated when the passenger airbag cover flew open...even though the current sunfire has a poor safety rating, the first one definitely saved my life!

Wonder if that means the Vibe is still driveable?Umm, by the look of it, i'd say prolly not. looks like too much torn metal would obstruct the spin of the tires, and i def doubt it could be turned...But my guess is they may have tried to get some power in the system for diagnostics maybe? to see what systems fried and what survivied. Not sure, i'm totally speculating.

I did get the moon & tunes package and you cannot get the 17" wheels with the moon roof. Besides, I have a nice set of 17" aftermarket wheels I want to purchase for summer driving and having the 16" stockers will help for the winter.
