Oil Cap Mishap

Post by inkinAbyssGT »

Check this out late last week I put one of those injen oil caps on the vibe, made sure it was nice and tight, took it for a hot lap on the freeway, and rechecked it for a tight fit. Fast forward to saturday evening after exiting the freeway on my way home im stoped at a light and I smell gas fumes and its getting stronger. So I drive the few more blocks to my house, pop the hood and low and behold oil cap is gone! no where to be found I looked everywhere it was getting dark so I got out the drop light for further inspection. There is a fine mist of oil all over the whole engine compartment. So I check the oil level and everything is fine so I put the stock oil cap back on, and head on over to a freinds house. Now everytime I shift or decelerate there is a major viberation that I can feel from the steering wheel all the way down to the floorboards. So I head back home and wait till the next moring when I can see better. Next morning I crawl under and a take a look around, and there it is my oil cap wedged tightly between the transmission and the skid-plate. It was in there so tight I had to jack up the trans a bit and use a hammer and chisle to break it loose. Needless to say the oil cap is destroyed. But the viberations are gone.Any thoughts and what may have cause it to come off? I guess it is possible that I was sent the wrong one? But it sure seemed to fit nice?

WHOA! That makes me a little leary about buying one of the Injen oil caps. I had planned on it, but I don't want the same thing to happen to me. It seems like if it was tight that it should not have come off. Did it click to let you know that it was tight like the gas cap does? Most oil caps do. I just don't want a messy engine compartment or to throw away $50! If it was tight, the only other thing I would think it could have been was the wrong size. Sorry to hear about your mishap.

Unfortuantly it dosent click or anything its just threaded with a rubber seal. It looked nice but I don't know if it was worth the $$. The injen logo is just a sticker that you have to put on. Just my $.02

I think you're right. It might not be worth the cash for the oil cap. I know it looks nice, but what a mess! Hopefully some of the other members who have this oil cap will post their experience with it. I will wait to make my final decision when I see some more experiences.

You should talk to Injen about the problem and see what they can do to rectify your situation.

How does an after market oil cap help?Is it just looks or is there a performance increase?

I have had my Injen oil cap on since mid Oct. and haven't had any problems (knock wood). I think it's worth having to dress up the engine a bit. Since all I can do to the exterior is some nice 18" wheels until the body kit comes out, I thought might as well dress up the engine. The oil cap goes VERY well with the Injen CAI and Freedom Design's strut tower bar.
