I got the chance to drive the Saturn Red Line which is the same thing and DAMN did that thing have power. Even crusing at 70, lots of power in reserve.
It's still just a warmed-over Cavalier in a Malibu suit, IMHO. Not impressed, and for 27 large I can think of MANY other cars I would look at 1st........who would have ever thought GM would market a J body for $27,000???

well see thats just it...its not a cavy...its actuullay a german car...its a opal platform..and from what i have read from car and driver and motoring 2005.....this thing will out perform just about anythnig in it class.....and from what most of them say it is a better fit and finish then the corella or the civic.....more refinement and better materials in the making.i know that 27,000$ cdn is alot of money but wow this is alot of car.now if the ss had the hatch lik ethe vibe well there is nothing it would not do.lol

Eh. It's ok. Personally, I think I liked the exterior of the last generation Cavalier more. It was more appealing. The Cobalt is, well, fricken boring as all hell. And definitely pricey. You probably can get a nicer G6 Coupe, similarly equipped, but that looks a heck of a lot nicer, and has cooler features, and a much better engine, for only a few grand more than a stupid SS.The Solstice I'm eyeing will be about 23-24...and after I add the supercharger, it'll come just about in line with the SS power-wise...if not a bit higher. And the solstice looks a HELL of a lot cooler!

It wouldn't be bad at all if it weren't for that god awful riceboy spoiler. GM, put down the JC Whitney "sport compact" catalog already! The Cobalt isn't much to look at - pretty boring, ho-hum kind of car. The interior is very nice, and while it's not that exciting of a car it's still very nice for the money. But man, once that spoiler is on there, it turns bland into raw "arrogant ricer this-just-added-100-horsepower" attitude. I no likey! Makes me think of a shopping cart when I see a spoiler like that. Then again, there seems to be a box to check for "Factory Rice" on the options list for just about everything these days. Fart cans and spoilers and body kits, oh my! Methinks I didn't get the memo that said this crap is cool. If they had a slushbox option so I didn't have to shift it myself, and had the tacky spoiler delete option, I may be interested. But they don't, so I'm not.

I dunno man, the SRT4 has 25-30 more HP and 50 more lb ft of torgue, I think the Cobalt would have it's hands full. I haven't seen any direct comparisons of the two yet.
The Cobalt can't hang with the SRT4 irt Speed/acceleration. Maybe it does handle better though, not to mention i think they're better looking, but you have to give the SRT4 its due, it's a damn quick car and easy to mod, not to mention it is sturdy enough to not blow up while modding it.

The thing is probably shoddy enough to blow up on its own!Dodge does NOT have a good track record of reliability with the Neon...I hope for all the cash people drop for one of those things, I'd like to think they made improvements in quality and reliability. Those two are enough for me to never even consider one.

I agree, the drivetrain however is Way overbuilt and will destroy Cobalts stock vs stock and mod vs mod. You can't compare the Straight line performance of the two cars the Chevy will lose.
i have been trying to find the comparo in times for the ss and srt4 they are about the same but i did find a another comparo that is much more in favour than the srt4.http://en.autos.sympatico.msn....18&pt=

I have raced against bone stock SRT4, they will run 13.9 without a problem, trust me, i know. Go look for the SRT4 forums and you will have all the proof you need. Plus there are a number of 400hp SRT4 running around on the stock block and stock tranny. The little pos is bullet proof.

If the thing gets out out time AT ALL, kiss that motor GOODBYE.....I worked at a Mitsu dealer about 12 yrs ago, and we had a Galant that was bought in Memphis, being driven to Nashville, at 85 mph, the timing belt broke... #2 piston came though the hood, and #4 went out the rear of the block, jamming the torque converter, and shattering the transmission case. Both front tire had flat spots , and then both front axles broke. The car came in on a wrecker (still smoking) looking like it had hit a wall. Mitsu did fix it, but the customer didn't want it back, so they bought it back.... That is the most extreme case I've even seen or heard or, but we did sell several more engines in the Galants and Eclispe due to timing belts jumping or breaking.

(Vibe_dude) the engine and tranny are just mitsu's out of the old eclipse. Really? Are you aware that the old Eclipse engines were 2.0? The Dodge uses a 2.5. Or maybe you mean the old 3000gt's? Those were 3.0.Just go to the SRT4 forums and get all the info you need from there. The pos Cobalt is no match for the pos Neon.
well here is a 2.0 ecotec cobalt with: Engine Type : Inline 4-cylinder Displacement : 2.0 Liters, 86 mm bore, 88.5 mm stroke (destroked for high RPM operation) Valves/cylinder : 4 Balance Shafts : Removed for high RPM operation Block Material : Aluminum with steel cylinder liners Head Material : Aluminum Crankshaft : Billet Steel Compressions : 10.0:1 Camshafts : Custom ground, with roller valve finger followers Induction : Garrett GT-42-R Turbocharger w/ air to water intercooler Ignition : Capacity discharge by MSD Fuel Delivery : Pectel T-10 Lubrication : Dry sump Exhaust : 4 into 1, custom bent Horsepower : 1250hp @ 9200rpm Torque : 800 lb-ft @ 8000rpm Transmission : X-trac sequentia so i guess they are both POS...........i will still take the cobalt..

As a Ion Redline owner, I will admit that the SRT-4 is beyond the RL or Cobalt SS in terms of straight line performance. The engine and turbo setup is a stout little power plant. If I recall correctly, Dodge had used the same 2.4 turbo in their minivans from the early 90's. The engine has been around the block and has proven itself. My internal Redline vs Cobalt SS was finally decided by the following factors: Price & Doors. Though the RL is the exact same car, it can be had for a lot less than the SS (and the SRT 4). The final price on my 2005 RL was just over $18K before tax etc. There were some nice rebates and a GMS discount involved to get me there. A Cobalt SS would have run me about $2.5K more. The other factor was the two half doors. I was moving from the Vibe which is the ultimate in utility in its class. If I were to buy a coupe I think I would go berserk from the change. Though the back seat of the RL is not huge, the half doors make entry and extraction easy enough.
They do look cool, but oh man ! the back seat is horrible ! on the coupe, an avg adult cannot sit up straight in it without having your head hit the ceiling, and the seat is horrilbe, it has about the same room as my old geao mettro did

Sounds like you've been sentenced to back seat duty in the past! I've sat in the back of mine for about an hour and it wasn't too bad. But then I was drunk at the time, so what do I know!
