questions from new owner

Hello again. I've been driving my new Vibe for about a week and everything seems good so far.One thing I notice is the lack of pep. Driving up any kind of steep grade and the car quickly slows down to 40 MPH (from 60 MPH).I made the mistake of having the cruise control on while on a hilly road (Taconic Parkway). It was fine on the flat or gently rolling sections. But, whenever it got to a hill the transmission would jump into lower gear and rpms would approach 4000.Other questions...Is there any reason to turn Overdrive off? Are there any situation where you should shift into 1 or 2? The manual is kind of vague on vehicle break-in. Any suggestions on that? Limit speed or rpms?

I can offer one bit of information: The manual says that the overdrive has to be off when towing. We had a rather long tow (Norfolk, VA to Chicago, IL) and it proved to be a nuisance - every time you shut the car off the overdrive automatically is on again when you restart.
