Coming up on 60,000... what to do?

Post by Zeromus-X »

Hey guys -- I'll be hitting 60,000 within the next few weeks and I'm wondering what kind of maintenance I should be looking at. I bought the car used about ten months ago at 29,000 from a dealership, but I don't know what maintenance was done in the past. I'll assume none. Over the course of time I've had it, I've never had a single thing go wrong and have never needed to do any service (except of course oil changes). The car still seems to be running great and I'm getting decent mileage (about 400 miles per tank on average before the low fuel light comes on = ~33mpg), so I hesitate to bring it in and have something get screwed up, but I also don't want to be driving down the road and have a belt snap or something that should have been changed.

Off the top of my head...a radiator flush. I'm sure there's more though.

This is what I would do...New plugsNew PCVLike Mase said, change the coolantNew Thermostat, this is a must...Check your radiator hoses while changing the coolantDrain trans fluid if an auto and clean the filterUse a bottle of Techron fuel system cleanerCheck your engine belt for cracks or glazing and replace if you have never done so even if it does not squeak, it is time.New air filter if you have not done thatNew cabin air filter too

How much do you think I'm looking at to have all this done? Plugs aren't bad, thermostat isn't bad, I have no idea how much the rest of it would run. Also, I've always run 93 octane through it, and while the additional octane probably isn't really doing any good, I'd assume that'd be keeping the fuel system cleaner, so maybe I could skip the Techron too.Never changed the air filter, cabin filter, or engine belt. I'm almost afraid to look at the cabin filter.I'm past 60k now so it's time to get on the ball I suppose!

To be exact on all these things I could not tell you since I do all my own work. My car is coming up on the coolant, T-stat and trans fluid change. If you search the site you will find others who paid a shop to have coolant and trans fluids changed. The air filter and cabin filter are easy, you will have to remove the glove box in order to access the cabin filter. If you can use a Philips screw driver, you can do this. The best place to buy them I have found is to order them from CG Enterprises. They are in Canada you can call them to order too. I have bought from them before and got an extra while doing so. $14.45 total. Here is the link I posted after I bought from them and asking if I could do so. http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=11745Air filters are easy too, I have the AC Delco filter number at home if you need it. I get mine at Murrays Auto Stores. $8-$10.00My car is also due for a PCV, I checked mine and it is time. Again, if you can turn a wrench you can do this. It resides under the black engine cover, has a rubber hose going to it of course and is threaded into the engine. Top right rear corner, 20 mm wrench. I have no part number for it yet, there are two different ones according to my dlr. One for the GT and non GT, different thread pitches. I will be getting one soon... Plan on a few bucks for this part. The belt, unless you have done them before you may not want to tackle this on your own. I just saw a post recently of someone here that has done it. I have tools with the leverage needed and designed for removing belts, it makes it easy to do. Guessing $25-$30 for the belt only. $100 total for a garage to do it? I would get the Techron Fuel cleaner regardless... It is only a few bucks and even though you use higher octane, you still need to clean the injectors. I use it in my Vette and quoted from a Master Vette Technician friend of mine, the Chevron is the same as the GM and it will cure pinging under hard acceleration. Usually for the guys that "grandma their Vettes" around town. I do not have a pinging issue with mine since it is a manual and sees high RPMs! I drive it the way it was built for. Anyway, Vettes use premium as well but the injectors still need to be cleaned. If you have never used it, I would now and it is easy to use and buy. Murrays auto or WalMart carry it.

when does the warranty expire on these is it 60,000 like gm or is it 100,000 like toyota or am I completly off?any way one thing you should do is get a inspection by the dealership. At our's atleast you can watch the tech to the inspection usually they catch things like leaks and other stuff under warranty. You probbaly wan't to get it fixed while still under warranty.

I'm in the US though, those are km, not miles. I believe it's 3yr/36000mi here... so I'm way beyond that one.I'm probably gonna take it to the dealership or to the mechanic I usually deal with for the belt and the PCV; the rest is no problem. Thanks guys.
