Oil Cap Missing

Post by Cire »

I just came home with my new 05 Pontiac Vibe and I was showing my neighbors the car. I went to open the hood and the first thing I see is no oil cap! Oil is splattered all over that part of the engine compartment. My Dad and I went through and found some imperfections before we left the dealer but neither of us thought to look under the hood. I'm going to call them tomorrow and see what they can do. Everything was going great tonight until this....

welcome to genvibe, congrats on the new car, and tell the dealer they need to give you one and clean up the mess. Make sure you check the oil level too

That's definitely on them...they should do as joatmon said, get you a cap, and clean everything up. If they try to play innocent, get a manager, and if needed, call GM and report the dealership.

This happened to me too on my very first oil change from the dealer. A day or two later I noticed this little wiff of smoke coming from my hood! I opened up the hood and the oil cap was not on and there was oil everwhere! Luckily the oil cap was sitting right there and I put it back on, but I took the car to the dealer and they shampooed the engine (for free of course) and gave me my next oil change free.

The dlr should fix for free but I would blame the plant if you just picked it up.Unless I am wrong the dlr prep does not involve adding oil or removing the oil cap for a reason.

The dealer could have grabbed the cap for another vehicle or for the parts department. When I purchased my Vibe, it was missing the antenna, and the salesperson just went to another Vibe and took its antenna and installed it on my Vibe. I guess they deal with missing parts later.

I imagine they just kept pulling them off Vibe by Vibe until some poor buyer didn't notice it was missing!

Well to give you an update the dealer towed the car the next day, cleaned the engine and changed the oil. I asked the manager if he could through in a free tinting and he said sure! So today my new Vibe was tinted and detailed. It turns out I bought the car I test drove and both my Dad and I saw the oil cap that day. They must have removed it during cleaning.

I've heard of some dealers who change the oil before delivery, since many cars could sit on manufacturer or dealer lots for months before being sold. Also, they could have topped off the oil before delivery. In either case, glad to hear they made good on it.

Document ID# 1254244 2003-05 Pontiac Vibe - FWD --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Info - Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI) #03-00-89-004 - (03/03/2003)Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI)2003 Pontiac VibePDI ConcernsBelow are three specific areas that need to be emphasized due to recognized concerns on delivered vehicles. These items are either unique to this vehicle or have significant impact on initial customer satisfaction.Automatic Transmission Shift Interlock (ATSI) CoverYou will find a plastic cap taped to the shifter handle upon delivery of these vehicles to your dealership. This round cap is provided to cover the ATSI override control. The ATSI override is found on the transmission shifter bezel to the right of the shifter. To assure the complete safety and integrity of this system, you MUST install the included cap. To do so, simply insert the cap into the hole until seated.Vehicle Transportation Tie-Down Underbody InsertsThere are two holes located in the vehicle underbody in front of the rear wheels (one hole each side) that are utilized for securing the vehicle during transportation. Two rubber plugs (found in the instrument panel compartment) are included with the vehicle to seal these holes in the underbody. You must install these caps to prevent water intrusion into the unibody which may cause excessive corrosion. Refer to the graphic above, which illustrates the passenger side of the vehicle (driver's side similar). The dark arrow indicates the position of the underbody cutout and the outlined arrow indicates the front of vehicle.Tire PressureImportantTires MUST be set to the recommended inflation pressure during the PRE-DELIVERY INSPECTION (including the spare tire). With the increased visibility and concerns over automotive tires in the media, it is more important than ever to properly check and adjust tire pressures (including spare). Improper tire pressures may result in ride, handling, and/or noise concerns. You MUST check and adjust the tire pressures during the pre-delivery inspection to the requested PSI as found on the tire placard, NOT the pressure indicated on the sidewall of the tire. The recommended tire pressure placard is located on the instrument panel compartment door. General Motors vehicles are shipped from the factory with tire pressures from 35 psi to 41 psi. Tire pressures are set higher at the assembly plants to assure proper tire bead seating.GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform these technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See your GM dealer for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.WE SUPPORT VOLUNTARY TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATION© Copyright General Motors Corporation.
