New Brake problem...maybe...

Post by pissedoffgokart »

Ok, so I am driving along all happy like and I come to a light. Stop. Then once I start going again, I get a strange sound soming from the passenger's side wheel, once I hit 35 - 40 I can feel the noise in my pedals. When I came to the next light I broke hard to see if it made a difference, it did. Now the noise/vibration starts at about 50 - 55. I took my wheel off a few minuted ago and spun the rotor, defnately SOUNDS as if the brake isn't completely releasing, I couldn't manage to find a feeler to see for sure but after I wiggled the brake fluid hose a tad it seemed to lessen the noise a little. Any suggestions other than wasting an entire day at a dealership (who know nothing about the Vibe STILL) for them to "no problem found / can't replicate" me?

Hey...I really don't know brakes very well but could the problem be from a slightly warped rotor? Is the noise happening constantly or maybe as if there's one part of the rotor that it rubs up against when the wheel goes around?I ask this because when I had my back brake popping issue, the popping happened as the brake hit the high spot causing the whole pad/pressure plate(?) (had air in the lines so the pad seat wasn't secure) it would shift causing a click/pop. Also noticed that especially when there was a slight rust film, like during damp weather or after a few days of non-driving, there would be an obvious high spot on the rotor that created a scrape sound but just as that high point passed the brake pads. ugh, sorry about the long explanation but could that be the issue? Just a thought...Dave

If the noise is worse when changing lanes, or turning, it might be a bad wheel bearing.

If my rotors were worn I would think I would feel it when stopping. I dunno, maybe that would depend on how warped they are.

I was thinking maybe it could be the bearing also. There definately is a grinding feel to it. Actually, it might be more break related than I thought, when I hit the breaks earlier today on my way home, every time there was an unsettling grinding type sound. I had plenty of pad left judging from my quick inspection last night.

you said "I can feel the noise in my pedals", but then you said "If my rotors were worn I would think I would feel it when stopping" when do you feel it, , and through which pedal?Seems like the disk brakes I have worked on always dragged lightly on the rotors, I thought a light scraping sound when spinning the wheel/rotor was pretty normal with disk brakes, the calipers never release enough that the pads pull totally clear off the rotor.

What I meant was, normally if rotors are warped you get a very distinct feel when pressing the brakes, like your ABS is going REALLY slow. When I am driving I can feel like a grinding sensation that coincides with the noise from th passenger wheel. strangly enough, I only feel it throught the accellerator, not the brake (but the brake pedal is the strongest point on any car so it may just be "tighter"). The grinding feeling when braking transmits through the break pedal. On a side note, I think I am the only person that can hear the noise. I mean othr drivers with their windows down don't look over as if to say "what the hell it that".
