Linux

I just started running Fedora Core 3, and was wondering if there were any other Linux users out there....if so, what flavor are you running, and how do you like it?

SuSE 9.1 (i386)YellowDog 4.0 (Mac/PPC)Debian 3 r2 (Mac/PPC and Alpha)I'm liking it. I like a couple of them better than the others. SuSE is great, easy to install and configure. YellowDog is not so great. It's basically Fedora Core with poor application support.Debian is fantastic. A bit of a pain to install (especially on my Mac) but overall my favorite.

Running SuSE 9.2 Pro on one box, SuSE 9.1 Pro on the other. And I ]love it! No windows allowed in my home unless they're built into the wall. I've tried I don't know how many different distos, but ended up getting hooked on SuSE back when it was at version 7.x... I've bought every SuSE version since then. Good stuff - easy to get up and running, and very easy to keep it that way. Nice all-around solid distro for the newbies and the seasoned Linux geeks alike. And I find KDE to be one of the slickest GUI's I've ever worked with. Very flexible - something I find in which the Windows interface is horribly lacking. I just don't want my desktop to look like everyone else's. Check the link to see the freaky way I like to configure stuff. I have to have the desktop configured just so - custom titlebars, being able to move the titlebar buttons, completely changing the interface style (BIG fan of Mosfet's Liquid theme,) transparent menus, the ability to shade windows, etc etc etc. All are very insignificant things, but Windows just can't do it.But the best part: Rock solid, no viruses, no spyware, no Internet Exploiter, no Active X, and no Lookout. Instead, you get a rock solid OS, plenty of flexibility, way more secure than anything M$ has ever put out, and doesn't have all that bloat. Which in a nutshell means you don't have to upgrade as often, crappy hardware can last longer thanks to the OS being pretty efficient. http://img.photobucket.com/alb...p.jpgh ... lb...2.jpg

I'm so proud of myself tonight...I finally got my Linux box connected to the internet without any problems! I actually installed RedHat 8 on this thing last May, and it wouldn't recognize my modem so I gave up on it since all we had at the time was dialup and I couldn't do what I wanted to do without being online. Well tonight upon coming back home from college, I decided to give it another go and, long story short, managed to share the internet out of the iBook with just a regular ethernet cable. Pretty darn cool. It worked first try...I was so proud! So now I'm actually typing this message from my Linux box...woot. Maybe now I'll actually get some use out of this thing, which is actually my first PC and is about 8-9 years old. It's barely even a Pentium, but it has a crapload of RAM, so it's actually running everything fine, including the GUI. Pretty impressive. Check it out...

ha ha, welcome to the dark side! You shall soon find the mouse disturbing, you need no steenkin' mouse, you have command line. Congrats on getting it going, it's a lot of fun. Now the real fun is soon to follow - blowing it up and having to fix it w/o reinstalling.

*cry* I think I need to shut down the Linux box in my bedroom so I can do some cleaning and possibly rearranging... And that's gonna kill my uptime record! 4:39am up 27 days 18:57, 6 users, load average: 1.00, 0.49, 0.29Almost a month without a reboot - not too bad for a crappy home PC. And even better considering how I've used and abused that thing every day. lol! Still chugging along just fine.

Man I was 19 days shy of 4 years of uptime once on an SGI server I manage for the college lab. The only reason we had to shut down was to repaint the lab. We tried to move the server while connected to a battery just to maintain the uptime. But alas. someone stepped on the cord and unplugged it. I hit 192 days on my iBook once. Not bad for a laptop...

Man, I think I need a bigger desk now that I got this thing running and it's no longer sitting in the corner, in pieces, collecting dust. Technology, anyone? LOL

Speaking of Linux, has anyone tried SuSE 9.3 Pro yet? That release went right over my head, as I've since converted to a predominately Macintosh lifestyle. My SuSE 9.1 box in the bedroom still gets lots of use, but the SuSE 9.2 box in the living room has now become simply a box to share out files via NFS to the mac and the other linux box. That's sad, I used to count down the days to each SuSE release, this time around I wasn't even thinking about it. I may give 9.3 a try... Might as well, I spent the money on a KVM switch so I can keep the mini and the pc at the same desk. Hopefully SuSE does not disapoint... Er, I should say, Novell... lol

Well, tonight was spent entirely in the process of upgrading from Red Hat 8 to Red Hat 9, and the thing still isn't done. I'd wake up in the middle of the night and notice the CD wasn't spinning, only to see some kind of package install error on the screen that I'd have to skip, put the CD back in, and tell it to go on. According to this it should have only taken 6 hours and 5 minutes, but it's taken me about 8.5-9 so far, with about 8 minutes and 38 packages left to go...woohoo, the end is in sight! Now let's just hope it works. I would have gone for an even more current version if Fedora wasn't labeled as so much of a "project" or "work in progress." I'm just not real hot on that; I'd rather have a release than something that basically seems to be like a continual beta project.I just hope this thing will run the GUI on this slow computer...it didn't meet the requirements but then again it didn't meet the requirements for 8 either...heh.Only 32 more packages before I can go back to bed...

I think the "issue" was more or less just the fact that this computer is old and slow and I was installing every single package on the CDs. Just wanted to be sure I had everything this time, since I was missing a lot the last time.Going through the up2date sequence to get that started now...so far it doesn't seem to be running any slower than 8 was running. You can only expect so much with a Pentium 166, but on the other hand, I really don't think it's any slower than this thing ever ran Windows.
