the sheer size of some of these SUVs can make visibility hard when you're in a smaller vehicle, and the mass of them can be dangerous to smaller vehicles in an accident, but the gas usage and driving habits are not limited to just SUVs. Here at genvibe there are often threads about people who drive agressively and recklessly, and threads about getting the most power and screw the efficiency. If we put up with them ok, and often even encourage that, then to be fair we shouldn't be bashing large vehicles if driven recklessly or at poor efficiency.

I think most of the SUV's are a real pain in the @$$ on the road. You can't see by, over, under, or around them and it's pretty dangerous if you ask me. Sure, some of you knuckleheads will say, "well, if you drive safely then you shouldn't have to worry about it", but either way, it would be a lot easier if all the cars were similar in size and stature that driving would be a much more comfortable and safe experience for everyone. You can't see around them to see traffic conditions ahead or to pass them or change lanes. They use way more gas than smaller cars which is becoming more and more limited as time goes by, and many cars these days are being built to hold just as many people in a much smaller frame, so the excuse of having 7 people that need to be driven everywhere is just that these days, an excuse to have an oversized vehicle to make themselves feel/look richer than they probably really are. So that sums it up, why pay more both up front and daily for something that is bigger than it needs to be? Napolean syndrome! End of story!

I have a friend with an Excursion. She has to swipe her atm card twice during every fill up because the machines have a $60 limit per swipe !be like me and take advantage of their large size!One time, I was driving down a 2 lane road full of cones because of construction. I slowed down for obvious reasons but this suburban kept riding my a$$. So I slowed WAY down...doing 25 in a reduced 45mph zone. A huge line of cars builds up behind us. There was no way anyone can pass because of the cones. Did I mention the road was a straight for 5miles? The funny thing is, that SUV that was riding my a$$ was so big that all the cars behind him couldn't see me. Therefore thinking the SUV was the slow dumba$$. I floored it and sped away as soon as the construction zone ended.

Even was going to persue a career as a DNR Officer here in the State of Michigan, my birthplace and future deathbed. Members need to realize that everyone here has different backgrounds and some take what people post very personal. I have offended people in the past and try not to make emotional comments that are not thoughtout. Be aware of the people around you everyone, you might be insulting a loved one someday. Honestly, I'm not one to complain. The only thing that I think that SUV's should not have is tinted windows at all. At least this will help everyone else see where we're going. That's just me though. The main cause is that I can't see past them because their windows are too dark. This is JMHO though. So, yeah. And everyone here is entitled to that and I'm not gonna take that away from anyone, not like I can anyways.Inder

But there really isn't any reason anyone would need to drive a huge full-size truck/SUV when they could get the same practicality with a smaller mid-size truck/SUV and make everyone else's lives a lot easier on the road not to mention when it comes to fuel consumption.

Around here I am the one doing the passing. But I am kind of a reckless driver though. The last two quotes pretty much sum up the stereotypical SUV/truck owner. I'm bigger and I have a 4x4 which makes you less important and envy me. Especially people who drive Hummers, they are the worst followed closely by soccer moms in Excursions. (No offense silverawd you are one of the exceptions) I have no problem with people owing large vehicles, I used to have a Dakota before the Vibe. What makes me angry are the people who own one not because they live somewhere where 4x4 is useful like on a farm or in Alaska. It is the turd brains that drive them in the city that have not one single use for them. Not sure how it is in the rest of the country, but in Iowa truck owners only have to pay $65 dollars for a license, which sometimes is a motivator for city folks to get one.

about a month ago I saw a small 4x4 pickup in the median high centered on a guardrail. I thought that pretty funny.I would like a bigass land yacht canyonero TRV (testosterone replacement vehicle) but I don't need one and can't justify using all that gas. I'm doing my part, I drive a 36mpg Vibe, which when I bought it was rated as getting the best mpg of all of the US brand/model vehicles. the extra mpg was why I got a 5 speed (which is a lot of fun)

i agree with silverawd. people who own trucks because they need trucks are entirely justified. i traded in a nissan frontier for my vibe, and no matter how much i love the vibe, i know i'm going to miss my truck (especially since i found out today that my duplex has been sold and i've got to move in two months). i used my truck bed all the time, sometimes for things that i wouldn't even consider putting inside the hatch on my vibe. of course, the reason i traded the truck in is because i was paying for it at the pump (19 mpg), and it had reached the point that the premium was more than i could justify to myself. someday when toyota starts selling a hybrid pickup, i'll likely be driving a truck again, and all of the folks in the small cars can laugh at me all they want as i circle the austin parking lots over and over again looking for a full-size parking spot.

Ok, I think we all agree that we are not bashing the people who actually have large SUV's because they really use them as they should. It's all the morons who have them as status symbols to whom our bashing is directed. It's people who drive Escalades, etc because it's the cool thing to do that drive me nuts. I really LOVE the ones with the 20+ inch rims and the low-profile tires. You know the closest that hog is going to get to running off-road is if it happens to run over somebody's flower garden. This is my gripe. If you want to drive something that sucks gas just for the heck of it, go buy a muscle car. At least you can use it for its main purpose.And, yes, I bought a GT because it is fast and fun. AND, it gets good gas mileage!

I hate it when SUV driver's think that with 4 wd they can speed down the road in the snow. Sure you may have the traction to get moving, but coming to a stop is much more dangerous. I'll laugh when I see an SUV stuck off the road in the snow because they were driving too fast. Another example is what I saw yesterday on my way home from work. Some lady was driving a Ford Excursion. This is a 3 lane highway, rush hour traffic, moving about 10-25 mph, and there is no where to go. This lady was riding the bumper of some smaller car in front of her, honked her horn a few times, and was making gestures. I passed her and was laughing. The car in front of her was about two car lengths behind the one in front of it. I hate drivers that are like that lady, but it's funny to watch them. One of the quotes on those articles said something about going to Home Depot and how those of us with smaller cars are envious of SUV owners. I have carried so much with my Vibe, especially recently since I just moved into my new apartment. Just last week I bought a coffee table, two end tables and a 5 piece dining set. They need to be assembled, but I am always amazed at the versatility of our cars! Just fold down all the seats and we have more usable space than some SUVs larger than our Vibes.

here in the chicago burbs SUV's are mostly for status. lots of huge ones too. you almost never see anything being hauled (except for the heavy carcass of the thing) and most times there is only the driver to be seen in them.did i forget to mention that we drive mostly on concrete-paved roads here with nary 2-3 significant snow storms a year?
