got ripped off by UPS again

Post by Thewhite »

when I received my Cat-Back, I paid 60 CND for some brok fees. I was kind of pissed to add that to the 410 CND for the Magnaflow. But now, it is worst, really! I paid 130 CND for my new grill (owesome look by the way!!), and I have to add 40 CND of brok fee to that. it's 1/3 of the value!!! man, all the economy I can do buying on eBay is burned with those fees!!! Is there anyway to not have them?

That is really suck. What kind fees you paid? You shouldn't have to pay any fees that you already paid shipping cost. I just don't get it that you have to pay more....I never have that problem before.

maybe you need to hook up with someone from this side of the border, have the stuff shipped there, drive over the line, install it on your car, and then drive back.but I know nothing of customs laws

With all the packages and letters going through the border, Customs can't inspect all, and it will be only a check on a flipboard. By USP or FedEx or whatever, each package is check by Customs, and they charge you for that. I think the best is, for my next buy, to ask to one of you if he/she willaccept to receive my package and send it to me by regular mail. But with my springs on their way, I won't have any order before next year...

Yes, it's not UPS, it's customs that's the problem. If you are buying a product from someone in the U.S., you must pay the customs fees because it's an import. This is why many American sellers on eBay will not sell to Canadians -- because too many complain or leave negative feedback for the seller because they refused to lie on the customs form and mark it as a "gift" instead of as a product being sold to a party in the destination country. If it's marked as a gift, no duties are charged, but you are in effect lying on a government document and could therefore get in trouble if you were found out. The best way to avoid this would be to have the product initially shipped to a friend in the U.S. who could then "gift" it to you; that way the seller would not risk raising red flags by constantly sending "gifts" to people in Canada.Edit: Customs fees/duties/tariffs do apply to regular post as well as services such as UPS and FedEx. When I mail something to Canada or receive something from Canada via regular mail, it has the customs form attached to the outside of the box, with boxes for whether it is sales goods or a gift.

UPS doesn't get the money.

UPS doesn't get the money.I beg to differ! On my last FedEx shipment, a $US90.00 RSB, I was charged $5.50 "Disbursment Fees" (Government) $33.75 "brokerage Fees" (FedEx) $35.89 PST/GST (government sales taxes) and another $2.75 PST/GST on the above fees (Government)I'd say they're teaming up pretty well to plunder my pockets!A previous UPS shipment had a similar $ breakdown, but I have had US Post Office deliveries that somehow flew under the radar and avoided some or all of the above charges.

I have it figured out for the best deal going. I'm an Ebay junky and have learned a few tricks. 1. Do not have anything of high value shipped to Canada by UPS or Fedex. They both have extortionate brokerage fees. Ship by USPS mail and you pay only the taxes+ $5.00 brokerage. No tax or brokerage if under $20.00 value.2.If seller will only ship UPS or Fedex and you are not too far from the border, have it shipped to "The UPS Store" closest to your border crossing. They charge only $5.00 to receive it for you and you only have to pay the taxes at Canadian customs, no brokerage fee.3, BEST DEAL Cross the border from the USA into a province you don't live in and you only pay the GST and no PST or brokerage fee. This is easy when you live near the Quebec-Ontario border. UPS and Fedex are the bandits in this deal. The government is only collecting the taxes which are due and you would have paid anyways if you bought the item in Canada.

well I received an email from the seller of my springs this evening. weird thing, I bought a springs kit for a '03 Pontiac Vibe, and they send me an email, three days after, to ask me spec of my vehicule (year, make, engine size...) anyway, I ask them if it was possible to send the kit via regular post. waiting some new about that. I don't care to paid them the 45 $ for S and H even if it's via USPS, cause I will sace 60 at the end...

I've got the same problem all the time in Germany with importing stuff.I was looking into what it would take to get a car imported. Say, if i wanted to bring a vibe over here.Shipping is only about $1k, but customs will add 16%. But oh no, it's not just purchase price, no, we're greedy and it's 16% of purchase price + transportation to seaport + shipping fees. And then, cuz we really like to screw our people let's add those import taxes -- another 10% on top of everything; that is, another 10% on top of (purchase price + transportation to seaport + shipping + 16% customs). In the end it turns out that I'd pay about 30% of the initial purchase price. i.e. a $20k USD vehicle is now $26k USD. Of course since the dollar is so crappy right now that's only 20k EUR, so it's not too bad. Then I found out that one can be exempt: If I'm a citizen of Germany, have lived in the states for over one year, the car is at least 6 months old, and the car is not sold in Germany until after 1 year of import date, and some other little clause I don't remember, I pay nothing. That exemption is for the purpose when someone has lived somewhere abroad and then moves back to Germany -- the items are then all considered household goods as part of a move.Sorry for the rant. Didn't mean to hijack the thread. It's half on-topic anyway.

As long as the sale price on the parcel is not higher then $20, you won't pay brokerage fees.I bought a capacitor off e-bay for 10$. The saller put the value at $25, so UPS chaged me $20!!!! in brokerage fees.By chance the saller contacted UPS and corrected the value of the cap, and UPS credited the brokerage fees. There's 2 way to not pay an arm an a leg in brokerage fees1- Do not use UPS or FeDex2- Have the seller putting a value of $20 or less on the package
