for the very first time since i bought the vibe i took her past 4000 rpm. the vibe reved right past the tip of the redline!!! wow did i give myself a guilty smile. who ever complains about not enough power in a base vibe is crazy!!! i really really think the horsepower is underated on the base 1.8l this engine sounds like a kawasaki 600 when revved. i love it. i truly love it!!
I've had mine up in the 6100-6300 several times. I love to rev it up and redline gears when I drive it. i can't wait till it has the supercharger on it. The power should be outstanding!!!

Yup, gotta say that the base vibe is no slouch. Maybe not a sports car but I've never noticed a lack. One thing people fail to mention (particularly when commenting on the 'lack of low end torque) is that you can hold a gear and get adequate power for a very large range of speeds. I find that quite convenient. And, sure it's not a GT, but winding 'er out to over 6k still provides a pretty nice kick

I'm finding that the base VIBE doesn't even need the fifth gear, because it revs so efficiently. I can get to and stay at 120km/hr in 4th gear without any problem. The engine is not straining at all. I realize 5th gear is overdrive and saves fuel and it should be used on the hiway. I find the sweetest gear is second. Revving to 6000 rpm in 2nd gear is a blast. A very well balanced engine/tranny combo indeed.
Vibe Rator, I couldn't agree with you more. I love the fact that I can hit 60MPH in second gear. I am thinking of changing my redline once the warranty is over. I want to change it to about 6800-7000 redline. I'm not sure how to do it, but I'm sure it can be done. I hope!!! That would give me that extra power band i'd like to have in 1st and 2nd gear.

If you want it to rev higher you will have to have computer reprogramed but unless you makes some mods (Header,CAI,Exhaust) there is no sense.

Nova, I think what CubanPete wa trying to say was that it feels more powerful than the 130HP that it's rated. I could be totally wrong though.

"I know but I still don't consider 10-hp "way underrated". 7% is not a signifigant amount in my opinion._______Happy Motoring!" Perhaps not, but it sure got Subaru in deep do-do when they overated a number of their engines by as little as 6 HP!
The motors are slightly underrated and both the 1ZZ and 2ZZ are great motors. Let them warm up in the morning or anytime after a cold start, 3-5 minutes or so, then let her rip. I've had my car less than a month ( about 1700miles) and I've had her to redline about a 100 times already. The motor loves it, it's a damn Toyota motor!! Change the oil/filter, rev it only when the motor has warmed up, and it'll last forever!!

OOPS -It WAS Hyundai, Not Subaru! All the more of a tempest in a teapot, 'cause who buys a Hyundai for the horsepower anyway? Sometimes all those lesser marques just blur together...
I wouldn't say a Subaru is a 'lesser marque' or brand. A Hyundai is, along with Daewoo, Kia, etc, but Subaru is legit.

I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't have a derivative of that system. I know several cars record information, atleast the last minute or so. If you wreck a car, a lot of GM cars actually have a 'black box' that records the last few seconds of info. GM engineers and whatnot can see that you were travelling at 110mph at 5000rpm or whatever....Pretty scary if the insurance companies/lawyers got a hold of it...

When I said "lesser marques", I meant volume-wise; they aren't the Japanese/Asian 'Big Three". Performance-wise, I see the new Subie WRX STi is coming soon to North America with 2.5 L., 300 HP, 6 speed, driver-adjustable front/rear power distribution & much more!
I'd say high 8 second range with some good rowing. Anyone else??

Mine was G-Teched at a best of 8.76. I average about 8.85 and I'd expect base 5-speeds to be in the mid 8's (8.4 to 8.5 range) and GT's in the mid 7's (7.5 to 7.6 range). Car and Driver claimed 8.5 for a base/5-speed and 7.5 got the GT.
I have been to the rev limiter a number of times and always think that the fun is over too quickly, should have went for the GT! I have about 15K miles now. Has anyone else noticed there seems to be more power after 10K miles? I know this thing feels like it should star in the movie The Fast and the Furious (spelling?)
