@#$%^@* piece of %&@*!

Post by Mr. Poopypants »

So, since I have moved in to the new house it has been a comedy of errors for the most part. Most of them have been caused by yours truly. So today, the fiance is at work and normally Sunday is cleaning and laundry day. So of course, I am here by myself so what do I do, duh, clean and do laundry. So let me interrupt myself by saying that we were given an old washer and dryer from my grandmothers house, she now lives with my aunt and uncle and no loger has use for them. And since they came from her house, they were of course.....OLD!So continuing my story. So on top of these appliances being old as dirt, the washer is tiny compared to the dryer, and the dryer, as most dryers, take longer than the washer, so you have a natural back up of wet clothes waiting to go into the dryer. So I am sitting down, taking a rest, when I hear this loud crash and what sounds like a 500 lb. mouse going nuts in the basement. Well, I don't quite know what happened and I kinda wish I would have seen it. I go downstairs to find the front of the dryer......THE ENTIRE FRONT, DOOR AND ALL....halfway across the basement damp clothes strewn about the floor and the dryer squeaking and smoking like if it keeps squeaking and smoking it's going to win a prize. So of course the smoke sets of the smoke detector and I have to dogs that are very reactive to loud noise, their ears did perk up at the loud squeaking but the smoke detector sent them into a frenzy. Now picture this if you will. I am in the basement, with a light haze of smoke all around knee deep in my damp and wet clothing dousing my now half assembled, and possibly on fire, dryer with a fire extinguisher. All the while, I have a smoke detector going off and two small dogs taking turns barking and howling. Where is the video crew and tall Southern on the rocks when you need one? OK, I'm done ranting.....and cleaning for the day, I will probably injure myself if I try to do anything more.

Man...that sucks...but your description was hilarious...LOL. I'd be curious to know exactly what happened too...I'm sure you wish you had surveillance cameras. Guess it's time for a new washer and dryer huh?

Yeah, new washer and dryer are right!! Here's my theory. Since it is a gas dryer. The gas filled the elements and it was not in time with the ignition coil, and once the ignition coil lit (late of course) BOOM! and that sent the front half of the dryer about 10 feet. This then caused a small fire from the lint that was trapped inside the dryer. It's OK to laugh, now that I know that my house is not burning down, I can laugh too.

I'm one of those neurotic people who would willingly install sprinklers and security systems that call the fire dept and such. Don't like candles, don't like fireplaces...you get the picture. Hopefully it's calmed down now and won't do anything else!

No, I remained calm and collected. I have unplugged the dryer and turned the gas off to it so that should be the end of the drama. All my other gas appliances are no more than 1.5 years old so I shouldn't have to worry about those. I need a beer.

Your story is like my nightmare come true! I just got my washer and dryer a year ago when we bought our Condo because the ones that came with the condo were also older than dirt. In fact the dryer was so old it didn't require the 220/240v outlet - just 110v. I had to get a new outlet installed for my new one. Anyway, like Kari, I am paranoid about fire so despite the fact that that my dryer is brand new, I keep thinking that if I leave it alone its going to blow up! yeah I'm weird, I know it. I read all these stories online about dryers catching fire from the lint and I have very fuzzy cats, so I have more lint than the average person, I'd say.
