Question about new cams?

Post by Lancer »

I'm finally getting supercharged as soon as my tax return comes in (wanted turbo forever but just can't afford it) but in the mean time I wanted to spice up the engine a bit with headers and cams. Crane offers like 4-5 profiles: almost stock, mild, wild, race only, and forced induction profiles. My ? is, can I get the f/i cam installed before I actually have the s/c? And/Or could I use the 'mild' cam with the S/C?

No. DO NOT get the F/I cams before getting the S/C installed. Just wait for the S/C and install the cams then. I think that would be your best bet. I would also think that you should upgrade your stock internals. The lifters may not be able to handle the A/M cams. But I may be wrong. But if you do plan on running cams, make sure that you get your tensior checked out before the end of the install. The reason I say this is because I just got my car back from a cam install, and the tensioner was gone on it. So, you may want to get that checked out as you have your motor apart. You may also want to check out http://www.newcelica.org, I know there are a couple of people on that forum that have done cams. I would ask them as well.Inder

Also, when you do get new cams, make sure that you find out what the break in period is. Mine was 50-100 miles. I did 120 miles to be on the safe said. What this means is staying below 3500 RPM's religiously. And trust me, it's not gonna be that hard. You're gonna wanna hear your car when it's idling. I love the way mine sounds right now.Inder

Thank's for the great advice! Is the nice idling sound from your car from the cams or the supercharger? And what does it sound like?

I'm not runnin any kind of forced induction. The cams control the lobe degree. The higher the lobe, the rougher it will sound. I'll try to get a video or sound clip of my car. It's not really that lopy. But it definitely does feel a lot better up top. Like, before, after bout 5500 RPM's, it was gasping for air. But now, this thing pulls hard till 7100 RPM. Inder

Still waiting for the Fed Tax return. I got the state back last week so it should be soon. I'm also holding out a bit to see what happens with the ATR turbo kit. $2500 for turbo vs. $3200 for S/C.

Most likely not this year. Too much going on right now with the tranny and trying to get her to paint and 'custom' (sorta) body kit. Mostly taking from others and making it work along with modifying the GM kit.I want to be able to get the outside DONE and have it running good again so I can get some 1/4 mile times and dyno numbers for everyone.Sorry! I know you've been waiting for me to join the ranks in the cams club.
