If you traded it in, I'd say there's about a 95% chance that the dealer took it to an auction and it's now in another state. When I traded my Mustang in for the Vibe, I was pushing them to give me more on my trade so they were on the phone with an auction house in Florida checking to see what a similar car was selling at auction for. They told me that my car would be headed there to be auctioned. In the end, I got what I wanted for it, though.

I dunno, around here we always seem to see our trade-ins sitting on the used car lots a few days later, or at least my parents and I do. Both of our leased Sonomas were sold on the lot within a week of turning them in, and my parents' GMC Jimmy was sold there too. When we traded a 1990 (I think) GMC truck for a 1995 Chevy Silverado, there were people looking at the GMC before the dealership even got an opportunity to clean it up, and the salesman told us that those people had bought it that day. I'd always been under the impression that they take them to auction if they don't sell on the used car lot...I don't know though.
The new car dealers around me will only keep a trade in if the car is only a few years old, or if it has very low mileage, or can otherwise be sold in "as good as new" condition. They want to make a lot of money selling extra warranties with their used cars, and they can do that best if the car isn't going to break. The name brand new car dealers around me almost never have a used car for sale under $10K. The rest go to auction.
That makes sense -- the GMC/Chevy trade was the biggest model year jump in ours. The Sonomas were both 3 years old because they were 3 year leases, and the Jimmy I think was 3 years old as well. One Sonoma and the Jimmy were "returned" to the dealer where they were purchased, which probably helps things as well, along with our reputations as good customers of that dealership and people who take good care of our vehicles. So yeah, I'm sure that probably did play into things. I still see my little blue Sonoma around here sometimes...the guy who bought it has added some tasteful mods and it really looks good.
