i was backing out of a parking spot today and when i put it in drive my engine shut off. Has anyone had this happen to them? Is it like a safety feature or something? Does anyone know?

Can't say I've ever had that happen...and I can't imagine what kind of 'safety' feature would cause the car to shut off when shifting into drive from reverse. If there was one, I would probably have experienced it because I rarely come to a complete stop before shifting into drive from reverse.
Did it just, shut off? Or did it feel more like a stall?

Yeah, if it's a stall, everything would stay on... It's possible the transmission just went temporarily stupid. Or, maybe you didn't push the brake all the way down? Dunno.. It's definitely wierd, but unless it happens again, it's probably just a one-time thing.

Make sure your car comes to a complete stop before switching your auto trans to a different gear!I'm guessing you were still rolling backwards when you shifted to 'D'? That would definitely cause a stall in our low-torque engines. And on top of that, a lot of unnecessary wear on your transmission.Sorry for sounding like I'm biting your head off, but my gf does it all the time in the Grand Am and I absolutetly can't stand it.

Well it's definitely close to a stop, it just happens to still be rolling most of the time. I'm not going 15 mph or anything when I do it. I could definitely see where that would create a lot of problems...heh.
