The little engine that could

Post by fitness freak »

On 2/21/2005 I did a post complaining about the gas mileage my 2003 AWD Vibe gave during an 833 mile round trip from Grand Rapids, Michigan to Cambridge, Ohio. I got 27.49 MPG on the first tank and 29.2 on the second. The EPA estimages highway mileage as 31 mpg. On 03/25/2005 I once again made the round trip. This time I did not have to fight snow and slush. I got 30.78 mpg on the first tank and 31.32 on the second. It is great to equal the EPA mileage claim, especially when you consider I went 70 to 75 mph whenever possible. I'll bet I could of exceeded the EPA estimate if I would of been willing to travel slower. It took me about 15 hours to make yesterdays trip. That includes stops for meals, gas, plus loading and unloading the car. I have no idea for truckers can are able to travel 10 or more housrs a day, day after day.

15 hours? That's a long one day trip. Glad to see your MPG went up to where it should be. Mine went up also after after the break-in period. You could probably get close to 33 or 34 if you were to drive 55-60. It is almost impossible to drive that slow though.

When I drove to Georgia, 13.5 hours one way in one day. I got really good gas mileage, around 30MPG. I was doing 75-80 MPH almost the whole way. I think the mixed driving is what hurts the mileage compared to the EPA estimates.

I have firgured out mine does best When I'm cruising around 90mph.The best I have gotten is 32mpg.But if I drive closer to 70mph, the best is around 29mpg.Go figure. The engine does seem to run smoother around 4,000 RPMS!

hey...really? I'm very happy with my GT's mileage but I notice if I'm cruising over 3400-3500 rpm, my mileage goes down noticably. It is nice though, to have the GT, be able to go 70-75mph and still get 1 or 2 mpg over the rated. Well in the Summer I do, this Winter am around 29 for Highway. Definitely wasn't that way my first Summer with the Vibe. Wind plays a major part in the mpg as well... about as much of a factor as it was in my old Ford Ranger. But that's to be expected.Dave

I'm with David. My mileage starts going the wrong way after about 3200 RPM. I get as low 25 mpg when I'm in a hurry and that's mostly highway. The motor is a bit more buzzy between 75 and 85.
