great offer for 18x8

Post by remusrm »

I know I am undecisive, but I know how to appreciate the price too. I was offered today at rent a wheel place 900 over 3 months as cash if i get some rims and tires form them. money wise is not bad, but my problem again is tires.they offer this:235/40/18225/40/18215/40/18the 235 look mean, but i would go for the 225. any input will help since i might jump on this tomorrow...

Here's a quickie comparison from http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.htmlSpecification Sidewall Radius Diameter Circumference Revs/Mile Difference205/55-16 4.4in 12.4in 24.9in 78.2in 811 0.0% "STOCK"235/40-18 3.7in 12.7in 25.4in 79.8in 794 2.1%---------------225/40-18 3.5in 12.5in 25.1in 78.8in 804 0.8%---------------215/40-18 3.4in 12.4in 24.8in 77.8in 814 -0.4%So, of the choices you listed, the closest matches in terms of correct circumference to maintain correct speedometer readings are the 225 (0.8% 'fast') and 215/40-18, (0.4% slow).Hope this helps you make your decision!

I may have mis-stated the extent and 'direction' of the size differences. Here it is againThese comparisons are for 16 wheels and 205/55-16 tires:235/40 = 2.1% error ='When speedo reads 60 mph you're actually travelling 61.3 mph'225/40 = 0.8% error ='When speedo reads 60 mph you're actually travelling 60.5 mph'215/40 = negative 0.4% error ='When speedo reads 60 mph you're actually traveling 59.7 mph'So, 'safest' strictly from a speedometer error standpoint would be the 215, which registers your speed just slightly greater than your actual speed. I'd go for the either the 215 or 225, if that's what looks best on the wheels.

I would go with the 225/40. That's what I have and I think the majority of others with 18s do also. My wheels are 18x8s and I think the instructions said that the minimum width for the 8" is 225. If you went with the 215s, your outer rim will be more succeptable to curb damage, plus it won't look as nice because your sidewalls will probably be more angled (look more like _/ than a |_|, but not that much).

I'm going for 225's when I finally get my wheels/tires. Hopefully that will be soon. I think the 225's fit the car much better.

I just do not want to deal with that. Also I will not lower the car.

I don't have any rubbing at all and that is with my Tein springs 2"+ drop. Have you seen any pictures of cars with large wheels and no drop? If not, you may want to take a look. A large wheel and low profile tire will make your Vibe look like it's been lifted. I personally do not like that look, but if you've seen some pics and you like it, then great. I was surprised that my ride is still comfortable after I installed my springs. Granted, most of the roads I drive on are in pretty good condition, but even on some not so great roads, it's not that bad.
