Rust proof, 3M, mud guards,....?

Post by 21Rouge »

I am looking forward to the arrival of our 5 speed....heck I ordered it last week and still no official order # . My wife is tired of me talking about it. Lucky there are understanding people on Genvibe When our family buys a car we drive it until it is dust (the Vibe is replacing a 13 year old Eagle Summit Wagon). I will get the Vibe rust proofed...probably thru the dealer as we are getting the 3 year 0% financing...so just tack it on to the payments None of our cars have ever had the stone/bug guard. I am considering this for the Vibe. I see some threads on Genvibe re the 3M invisible bra. How much would this cost including installation? I am not a proficient 'do it yourselfer'. Can someone recommend a detailing shop in the Markham/Richmond Hill area? What about mud guards? Is that a worthwhile add-on?I will likely buy some cans of Scotch Guard and do that myself.Any other worthwhile cost efficient body protection you might suggest/Thanks for your advice.Doug

Get the GM mudguards. They fit well and look good. I would also recommend the GM cargo area rug. If it is available again, the GM bug deflector is a nice looking addition also. Vent visors too. Any GM accessories can be added to the price and included in the financing.

Thanks for the reply Sunny.Quote, originally posted by Sunny »Get the GM mudguards. They fit well and look good.Do mud guards really protect? Do such guards go on two/4 wheels? The mudguards work great, I have them. They are sold in pairs, front and rear. If you get the invisible bra, the deflector would not really be necessary but looks cool. I have one also. You might want to get a bumper guard also. It protects the loading area of the rear bumper but not the edge.

I see the description beside 12499855 as "2003 2TONE W/ RKR EXT, 2004+ 2TONE". Just wondering if there has been changes for the '05 MY.

You can actually buy the vent visors from parts and install them yourself for less the the cost the dealership's business office will offer to do the job. There are aftermarket sources for bug deflectors. Yeah go with the mud guards, they don't fit on my Vibe though, to low... heh.Now I have that clear 3M stone guard on my hood. VERY highly reccommended. I would suggest you call Brian Leach who services the Brantford Woodstock Tillonburg Ingersoll area mostly. He does Auto Trim Design and put the clear sheet on the hood of my car, can't even tell its there. Charged me a very good price to. If his numbers have not changed, his business number is (519) 863-3731If you want your windows tinted, done perfect and any % you want, call Mark Roberts (519) 771-0417 its his work cell. He did mine and they fit the window perfect without bubbles and lines perfectly with the window edge.

we got the rust/fabric/paint deal through the dealer . they had the bronze/silver/gold packages...they gave us the 'gold' for the price of a 'bronze'. i think they needed to 'sell' a couple more for a 'bonus' so they kept coming down in price until i agreed. they did a pretty good job. (i'm happy with it so far) on the undercoat and fabric stuff (fabric has been tested with the dog in the car). Not sure about the 'paint' protection. but they say it's to prevent fading and such and it's only been a year.

He answered me right away saying that GM has not released guards for the 05 Vibe and he has had lots of experience ie complaints with the '04 guards NOT fitting properly on the 05. What have 05 'vibers' done re mud guards?

I didn't realise the body style changed other then the front end between 04 and 05 unless people have been trying to fit two town 04 mudflaps on monotone 05...03 and 04 body moldings are different though.

I know that 2 tone dont work with mono. It is confusing. I guess I just need to hear from 05 mono drivers that have successfully used the 04 flaps.

I called back and explained about the incompatibility using mono flaps on 2-T and vice versa and I even gave him the part no for the 2-T flaps...he didnt know there was such a thing. So I am betting all is okay as long as one has the right part nos.

well either way I think monotone 04 mudflaps should fit the monotone 05. The two tone cladding on the 03 is different from the 04 two tone cladding which brought a lot of issues and many impatient 04 Vibe owners waiting for the mudflaps.

(removed)?? I got my Vibe about a month ago and ordered the all season matts, cargo matt, bumper protector and splash guards. Never mentioned a problem about the splash guards, they're listed under vibe accesories at gmcanada.com.

All we are saying is that there are different part nos for the mud guards depending if they are intended for a mono or 2-T Vibe. Btw, the rear bumper protector from GM is about $12 cdn more than the protector for the Matrix purchased at a Toyota dealer and it does fit the Vibe.

Speaking of differing prices..I emailed the dealer to see how much they would charge me to get 4 mud guards installed as part of the PDI. He wrote back that he would do it for me for $69 cdn per pair I called their parts department and found out they cost $22 a pair! I guess the installation is quite tricky .

no way!I installed all 4 mud flaps on my own. It took me literally a half hour (45 min tops....if you count the bathroom break )Don't bother, it's easy. If you need help let me know.

considering you're getting the bumper protector from Toyota, make sure you clean the bumper well when you get home. No dust, rubbing alcohol. But before you do that, locate the protector and felt tip pen the location (then clean) and then apply. They did this at my dealer and the guy that does all that is very detail oriented and did a good job.

ANd thanks for the offer of advice. I am not very technically inclined so I will take you up on it. I think I have read somewhere that one must remove the front tires to do it more easily...or was it the back ?

it's the back but i managed to get it done without removing my tires. One less screw than there's supposed to be but it didn't matter this winter. I think i used the dremel with the flex shaft and a screw driver drill bit that fit in the dremel chuck....can't remember if that worked or not but i know i tried that along with just a regular drill....the wheels only have to be removed for one screw so it isn't so bad. for the front, turn your wheels and you get tons of room!

Rears are hard to do but done properly and securely by removing the rear tires to get as much room as possible. Or unless you got an electric screw driver with swivel end? I know I don't lol. Most dealerships have a flat fee for installing mudflaps.. how much were they going to charge you?

The dealership emailed me quoting $138 for four installed...so I guess they want almost $90 just for installation It is this huge markup for an accessory, especially considering it is going on a car bought from them, that makes me look elsewhere for rustproofing.

I think it is Krown. The disadvantage of Krown for me is the required yearly retreatment. And if it is 100 dollars a year and the dealer charges only $399 one time, with a lifetime warranty, the dealer looks like the way to go?
