Injen and AEM CAI: Differences?

Okay, so after months of debating, I've finally decided I don't want to invest in the ram air hoods. Yes, they look cool, but I've got better things to blow my cash on (like another whole project car with a much higher "cool" factor than the Vibe). So, now that I've settled on a CAI system, answer me this: Is there really any difference between the Injen and the AEM brands? Which would you recommend?Thanks!Z600

Why put money into a car that you don't like/enjoy? Why don't you take you "pretty little stickers" and buy... let's say...a Civic, they look nice with stickers. To answer the question, not much difference, a name and your preference.

Sheesh! Take it easy guys! I LOVE my Vibe... best car I've ever had! What I meant is that I have a really cool (in my opinion), unusual project car that I'd much rather sink my money into. Now, if I had a big 'ole wad of cash, like the dudes that buy superchargers and ground effects and whatnot, then I'd love to do a really nice custom job on my Vibe. But, as it is, I've got seriously restricted fundage to work with. So my little Z600 gets the majority of it, and the Vibe gets what's left.To answer your question scherry2, my project car is a 1972 Honda Z600 minicar. Basically the grandaddy of the Civic. The Z600 was only produced for 2 years (71 & 72) before they gave it a bigger body and a larger engine, and dubbed it the 1973 CVCC. It's got a whoppin' 600cc air cooled motorcycle engine putting out an earth-shaking 35 horses, top speed around 75 mph. It needs an engine rebuild, some upholstery work, and a new paintjob (plus a touch of bodywork from rust). So, as you can see, it needs the $$$ more than my Vibe, which is already pretty nice.And no, there's not much of a forum for the old Zs. Just one Yahoo group. Not much to talk about, except how hard it is to find parts. And PhillyVibe, most of my stickers are the overlays from Grafxwerks. I begrudgingly admit, I do have a few Joss Whedon stickers on the back. My wife and I are both Buffy fans. (Go ahead, laugh! )~ Z600

To answer your question...no, no real performance difference, BUT, AEM's doesn't make one for the Vibe, it's for the Trix . Their C.A.R.B. exemption is not filed for the Vibe, whereas Injen's must be since it's made FOR the Vibe. I might actually switch to Injen just for this reason, instead of reinstalling the stock airbox when I have to get a smog check/test next year.Being made for the Vibe, Injen might have also accounted for our foglight housing, which sticks further into the bay, rubbing on the filter cone. Mine is dented and might need replacing if a wear spot from the foglight exists.

For all you Injen users (abusers... ) out there...Anyone use the Heat Sheild/Splash guard on their GT?I hear a lot of talk about smooshing (technical term) the filter behind the fog lamp, wouldn't this sheild get in the way even more?

I do not have the guard on my GT, and for some reason or another I had no smooshing of the filter. I removed the front clip for the install, which I believe is the best way to approach this project. I did however cut a small(note small) notch in the bumper foam for a nice fit for the filter.

ROFLMAO! Not to totally hijack the CAI thread, but...A fraternity brother of mine had an orange Z600! One time we picked it up and put it on the porch of the fraternity house. Literally handled like a go-kart with doors & windows...I distinctly remember going SIDEWAYS through an s-curve (with a railroad underpass in the middle of it) while wedged into the 'rear seat'. The car was so small, we didn't even come close to either support for the train trestle! Post a pic, please!

By the way, where exactly does the cold air filter go? I haven't seen any pics of where the filter itself actually fits. Will the splashguard be necessary?~ Z600

ive gone through water 6+ inches deep with no prob, so i doubt you will need the shield. the filter rests pretty much right on the drivers side fog light. i had to smash mine a bit to get it to fit.

Okay kostby, here's my Z600 right after I got it 3 years ago. It's currently an empty hull waiting for paint. And an engine. And new upholstery. And a million other things. BTW, I ordered my Injen CAI today from Ptuning. Thanks to all who gave their 2 cents worth. ~ Z600

Wow! My CAI came in from Ptuning in just 3 days! Not bad for free shipping...I had no idea these things were so big! The pictures never did it justice... that piping is huge! I've also never seen it posted that you have to remove body parts to install it. That's a bit of a bummer. I was hoping it'd be a little easier. On average, how long does it take for someone with moderate mechanical know-how to install one of these?~ Z600

Please tell me you are swapping in a newer engine for that thing. Its so small I bet it scoots along pretty good though! Mmmm 1000 CCs. Prolly be cheaper than original parts too. Heck, even a new 600 would double you horse power.

No way man! Goin' all original on the Z600. I like the simplicity of it, and though the horsepower is puny, it doesn't feel that slow. No slower than my old Saturn, anyway. This thing actually holds a record top speed for a stock minicar @ 94mph (thought the manual claims 75mph is the top speed), and I've found a sport rebuild kit with larger pistons and such.However, I have seen someone on the Net wedging in a small 4 cylinder from an Acura. I dunno how they did it, but I bet it's a helluva ride!~ Z600
